Jung Won-yong is a distinguished official who served seventy years of successful public service, in no small part to his prolific writing skills which is a necessary trait for a public official. After passing the literary civil service examination(mungwa) at the age of 25, he began his official career as a sagwan(history recorder in the court) and he recorded not only the history of the nation but also his daily personal life. Jung wrote in his diary almost every single day for the rest of his life. The title of his diary, Gyeongsan Jonghwan Ilgi(Diary of Gyeongsan’s Office), clearly signifies that Jung(whose ho was Gyeongsan) wrote his diary distinctly conscious of his official position. There are thirteen manuscripts written by Jung, including Gyeongsan-jip, in the Yonsei University Central Library. These volumes can be divided into four general categories: 『Yaksan-rok』, 『Gyeongsanbukjeong-rok』, 『Giseong-rok』, and 『Gyeongsanjipbu-rok』 are anthologies; 『Gwancheop-rok』, 『Seocheop-rok』, 『Yugyeong-rok』(which details the facts and the proceedings of homicide cases), and 『Bukcheop-rok』 are archives of official documents; 『Chongjinpyeon-geum』 and 『Suhyang-pyeon』 are testaments; and 『Soesadongjeong-ilgi』, 『Yeonsa-rok』, and 『Gyeongsan-ilrok』 are diaries. Material published in 『Gyeongsan-jip』, an anthology printed with movable metal type, is only a small fraction of his writing. Most of the unpublished material are official documents, which officials wrote on the daily base in large volumes. These records give us a glimpse of Jung’s life as a typical diligent government official, keeping and organizing detailed records of his daily tasks throughout his life.
