이 글은 ‘황진이’ 설화의 역사소설화 메커니즘을 그 담화적 특질에 주목하여 밝히는 데 목적을 두고 있다. ‘황진이’ 설화 소설화 작업의 출발점이 된 1930년대 이태준의 『黃眞伊』에서부터 현재까지 발표된 주요 텍스트를 분석 대상으로 상정하여 계보상의 지형도를 그려보고자 한 것이다. 그럼으로써 궁극적으로는 한국의 근현대 역사소설사의 일단을 조감해고자 했다. ‘황진이’ 설화가 역사소설로 수용되는 과정에서 형성된 모본 텍스트성은 신문연재 역사소설의 일반적인 특질과 ‘황진이’ 설화의 특수한 일면의 혼종적 국면이 빚어낸 결과였다. 이는 오늘날의 창작에까지 계보적 특질로 공유되어 오고 있다. 그와 동시에 ‘황진이’ 설화를 변주하거나 새로운 담화 형식으로 수용하려는 실험이 지속되고 있다. 특히 최근 들어서는 허구적 서사의 지평을 전면적으로 확대한 작품들이 등장하기 시작했다. 이와 함께 담화구조 차원에서도 전복적인 시도가 이어졌다. 그것은 비단 ‘황진이’ 역사소설 창작 계보상의 개별성이 아니라 역사소설 글쓰기 일반의 경향이기도 하다. ‘황진이’ 역사소설의 계보적 고찰을 한국 근현대 역사소설사를 부감하는 작업의 일환으로 환원시킬 수 있는 이유가 여기에 있다.

This study focuses on uncovering the mechanism by which the story of ‘Hwang Jin-i' has undergone historical novelization by examining the discursive characteristics of the text. From the departure point of the first novelization of the story of ‘Hwang Jin-i' by Lee Tae-jun in the 1930's until the present day, this study analyzes the important texts to ascertain the configuration of its genealogy. Consequently, this study ultimately seeks a bird's-eye view of the outlines of modern historical novelization in Korea. The model textuality formed in the process of the transforming the tale of ‘Hwang Jin-i' into a historical novel reflects both the general characteristic of a historical novel serialized in a newspaper and the unique hybridized aspects of the ‘Hwang Jin-i' story. Consequently, all the productions of the ‘Hwang Jin-i' story up to the present day possess these genealogical characteristics. At the same time, there are continuously new attempts at reformulating the story of ‘Hwang Jin-i' or presenting it in a new discursive form. Specifically, recent works have begun to expand the horizon of fictional narrative. In addition, there have been continuous attempts to subvert the narrative structure. These tendencies are not limited merely to the genealogy of the ‘Hwang Jin-i' historical novels, but are general trends applying to the writing of historical novels. This is the reason why a genealogical examination of the historical novels of ‘Hwang Jin-i' is one link in a broad overview of modern Korean historical novels.
