검열은 미국아동문학사에서 가장 민감한 사안 중의 하나이다. 도덕적, 종교적, 정치적 견해를 달리하는 단체들은 ‘논란이 되는’ 아동도서, 특히 아동문학 작품에 대해 이의제기를 한다. 미국에서의 아동도서의 검열문제가 왜 이토록 민감한 사안이 되는지를 검열의 표적이 된 아동문학 작가와 작품을 통해 알아보고자 한다. 아동도서 특히 미국 내의 아동문학 작품에 대한 검열의 대표적 사례를 조사하여 아동문학 작품에 대한 검열의 문제가 지닌 사회문화적 함의를 규명하고자 한다. 또한 아동도서 검열의 주요 사례를 소개함과 동시에 각 시대별로 미국의 사회적 변화에 따라 검열의 성격이 어떻게 바뀌어왔는지를 알 수 있다. 미국 내에서의 검열 논쟁은 아동도서가 다양한 이유로 쉽사리 검열의 표적이 되고 있음을 보여주고 있다. 아동문학이 금서목록과 이의제기 도서 목록에 나타난 검열의 이유는 여성, 인종, 종교에 대한 차별과 편견, 성과 외설, 상스런 언어사용, 폭력성 등 다양하다. 이는 어린이 문학의 소재나 주제의 성격이 존재하지 않는 듯 보인다. 문제제기 된 내용을 공개하고, 분석하고 평가하는 일은 의미가 있다. 어린이 책은 지금까지 어른의 감시 속에 존재해 앞으로도 지속적으로 통제될 것이다. 검열에 대한 논쟁과 이에 대한 연구는 어린이들이 읽을 내용에 대한 균형 잡힌 시각을 제공할 것이며, 검열자들의 지적 통찰력과 사회적 감수성을 지속적으로 반영할 것이다.

Censorship is one of the most sensitive issues regarding children’s literature in the United States. Groups that have different moral, religious, political values attack children’s books, particularly stories for children. This paper is a survey of how the issue of censorship has developed in the American society in different periods according to political climates and social changes. Also, this paper investigates the different positions groups hold toward censorship of children’s books. The reasons of censorship as shown on the ALA lists of banned and challenged books are various. The issues concerning censorship are ‘sexual explicit(language), offensive languages, discrimination against sex, race and religion, violence and etc. It seems that there is no safe-heaven for children’s literature. It is meaningful to expose the cases of challenged children’s books; it is more important to analyse and evaluate them. Children’s books remain to be under the adults’ surveillance and control. Studying the censorship debates equips us with a more balanced perspective on reading materials for children. They reflect censors’ intellectual insights into the social concerns and sensitivity of the United States.
