백석의 시는 순수하고 천진한 유년화자의 동심을 매우 아름답고 생생하게 표현했고, 그의 유년체험을 묘사함으로써 유년의 정서와 감정을 실감나게 표현하였다. 백석의 시 작품에는 설화적 세계를 통한 전통 계승의 의지가 그의 동심 지향성과 맞물려 잘 드러나고 있다. 그래서 그의 작품에는 옛 이야기를 서술하는 방식의 기법이 자주 등장한다. 백석은 전통 문학의 계승을 통해 민족 의식을 고취시키고자 했는데, 전통 문학의 계승이 민족적 긍지라는 신념은 해방 전 시들이 보여주는 전통적인 문학 양식이나 옛 풍습에 대한 긍정적이고 적극적인 수용의 자세를통해서도 알 수 있듯이 지속적이고 확고한 것이었다. 이미 구전 문학에 대한 높은관심을 나타낸 백석은 동화시 창작에 있어서도 구전 문학의 여러 특징들을 반영함으로써 전통의 계승을 추구하고자 했다. 본고에서는 이와 같이 백석 시에 등장하는 설화성의 문제를 중심으로 해서 그가 ‘동심’을 바탕으로 민족적 정서를 불러 일으키고자 했음을 고찰해 보았다. 백석자신이 어린 아이 같은 순수한 영혼의 소유자이기도 했지만 유년화자시나 동화시는 그의 내면 속에 있는 전통 계승 의식이나 민족적 정서를 표현하기에 매우 적합하고 유용했다는 사실을 알 수 있다.
Baek Seok’s poetry not only gives a vivid portrayal of pure and uncorrupted voices of children speakers but also renders sensitive and realistic depictions of sentiments and emotions of youths based on his own childhood experiences. The children-oriented nature of Baek Seok’s poetry is also linked to his desire to preserve tradition through traditional literary lements such as folk tales and myths. Consequently, Baek Seok frequently employs narrative strategies of borrowing from Korean folklore. He has a firm conviction that poetry drawing on traditional literature can inspire his readers to develop national pride, and this conviction has been best exemplified in his poems written prior to Korean Independence that engage actively with traditional literary styles as well as traditional modes of life. Baek Seok’s children’s poetry likewise seeks to preserve tradition by absorbing various features of oral traditions of Korean culture. By emphasizing the communal spirit of the nation, Baek Seok intends to instill upon his people the will to persevere through life during the Japanese occupation. The children speakers of Baek Seok’s poetry are intended to evoke childhood memories of people trying to weather the difficulties of life and live more fulfilling lives. Baek Seok’s poetry centering upon “the child’s mind” also reflects his aspiration to the communal spirit. Focusing on the folklore qualities and the communal spirit of his poetry, this essay examines the way in which Baek Seok desires to inspire national sentiments through children speakers and the child’s mind. It is not only that Baek Seok himself possesses the innocence of a child but also that hildren’s voice and children’s poetry prove to be very effective in conveying his long cherished wish to preserve tradition and national sentiments.
