스토리는 우리 자신과 세상을 비추어 보는 거울이며, 표출하고 싶은 인간들의 끊임없는 욕망을 여러 가지 색깔과 방식으로 전달하는 매개체다. 사람에게 감동과 교화를 주며, 사람의 마음을 바꾸고 심지어 세상을 변화시키기까지 하는 강한 힘을 스토리는 갖고 있다. 이 논문에서는 죽음이라는 모티프를 끌고 가는 샬롯을 작가가 아닌 스토리텔러의 관점에서 바라보며 그녀가 사용한 스토리텔링의 전략, 구조, 메시지를 분석하였다. 샬롯이 윌버를 죽음으로부터 구원할 수 있었던 것은 그녀만이 갖고 있었던 독특한 스토리텔링 전략이 있었기 때문이다. 샬롯은 인간이 가질 수 없는 거미줄이라는 도구를 매개체로 사용하여 이야기를 짜 가며 사람들을 신비한 스토리의 세계로 초대한다. 샬롯의 몸에서 뽑아내는 거미줄은 그녀의 영혼, 노력, 지혜를 담고 있으며 삶과 죽음을 교차시키는 덫을 갖고 있는 신비한 결정체인 동시에 이야기가 펼치는 소통의 장이기도 하다. 분절된 단어로 연속성 있게 이루어지는 샬롯의 스토리는 마을 사람들(청자)과 교감을 이루며, 결국 사람들의 마음을 변화시키고 또 한편으로 윌버에게는 세상의 이치와 지혜를 깨닫게 한다. 샬롯과 『아라비안나이트』의 세라자드는 죽음이라는 문제를 해결하기 위해 스토리를 시작하게 되었고, 그 이야기들은 분절적이지만 연속성을 갖는다는 유사성이 있다. 세라자드는 이야기를 통하여 샤리아르 왕의 부당성과 잔인함을 인유하여 그녀 자신을 죽음으로부터 보호했고, 샬롯 역시 사람들의 마음을 정화시키며 윌버를 구원한다. 『아라비안나이트』와 『샬롯의 거미줄』은 스토리텔링이라는 우회적인 쾌락을 통해서 현실의 갈등과 문제점을 해결하고, 더 나아가 사람들에게 지혜와 교화를 주며 스토리텔링이 갖는 힘을 입증한다.
Story is a mirror that reflects ourselves and the world, and also it is a medium through which people express their endless desires in various ways. Stories can provide people with lessons and messages that are so compelling that it can change minds of people and, in some cases, even the world. This paper analyzes the strategy, structure, and messages of Charlotte's storytelling in Charlotte's Web. Charlotte is able to save Wilbur from death with her special storytelling strategies. She uses her web as an instrument to open a new perspective to people and reveal stories previously hidden to them. Threads from Charlotte’s body are products of her soul, effort, and wisdom. The web is for a trap of life and death, and it is also her special way to communicate with humans. By performing miraculous feats and writing messages, Charlotte is able to change people’s minds and teach Wilbur wisdom and the ways of the world. Charlotte and Scheherazade in Arabian Nights both give brief, independent stories, but stories endlessly continue to fill people's infinite desires. Therefore, the stories could delay death of Wilbur and Scheherazade. Scheherazade saves her life with stories that divert the ruler Shahryar’s cruel and wrongful mind, Charlotte saves Wilbur in a similar way, despite composing short messages. The words themselves and the way they are used can be so powerful in Arabian Nights and Charlotte’s Web that their stories can solve conflicts and problems through the strong power of storytelling.
