The purpose of this paper is to investigate from the point of view of Lao-tzu(老子), Miyazaki Hayao's animation ‘Spirited Away ’ (2001). Miyazaki Hayao is one of the most famous Japanese animation movie directors. Majority of his films are inspired by nature and feminism. The subject he often deals with involves the element of water which is a common symbol of feminism. The theme of ‘greed’ can also be viewed from Miyazaki Hayao’s interpretation of Lao-tzu’s fundamental virtue, as he considers feminism and its symbolic associations as primarily significant in combating the ills of modern society brought by endless desire The film celebrates the strength of the heroine’s (Sen千) feminist features. As mentioned, Lao Tzu associated water as a symbol of vitality and the power of healing. To mention a few quotes which stimulates the evil of greed and a feminist impression, “one who is content to satisfy his needs(知足之足)”, “softness and tenderness are attributes of life(柔弱者生之徒)”, “the highest excellence is like (that of) water(上善若水).” These aphorisms constitute the very essence of the film ‘Spirited Away.’
