How Natural is the Nature?－Judith Butler’s Sex and Gender－

이 글은 섹스와 젠더 개념을 중심으로 국내에서 통상 퀴어 이론가로 알려져있는 주디스 버틀러가 여성주의에서 차지하는 위상을 밝히고 있다.여성주의의시대적 흐름에서 제3세대에 속하는 버틀러는 여성의 고유성과 차이를 내세우며 부상한 제2세대의 논제들을 성(性)정체성 자체를 문제 삼고 섹슈얼리티를논제화하기 시작한 다음 세대로 연결하는 가교의 역할을 하는데,그 중심에는자연적 범주에 대한 비판이 핵심을 이룬다.버틀러는 여성주의에서 관철된 주체의 분할,곧 생물학적 성(섹스)와 사회(문화)적 성(젠더)의 구별에서 여전히신체가 젠더의 토대로 간주되고 있음을 간파하고,몸이라는 자연의 범주가 단일하고 동질적인 주체로서의 여성이라는 허구적 범주를 만들어낸다는 인식 속에서 궁극에는 섹스의 탈자연화를 꾀한다.이로써 버틀러는 여성의 범주에서줄곧 볼 수 있는 ‘자연적’이라는 일련의 전제들과의 단절을 시도한다.하지만담론적 실천으로 파악된 버틀러의 권력분석은 지배적 규범으로서 성의 이원체계와 강제적 이성애주의가 어떻게 역사적으로 발생했는가에 대한 해명을 내놓지 못하는 취약성을 안고 있다는 점에서 자연적인 것이라는 신화로부터의완전한 결별은 여전히 미완의 형태로 남아 있다고 할 것이다.

This writing identifies the position that Judith, known normally as a queertheorist in case of Korea, enjoys in feminism centered on the concept of sex andgender. Butler who started to address sexual identity itself when it comes to theissues of the second generation that emerged while addressing women’suniqueness and difference. At its core, criticism towards the natural rangecomprises the majority of discourse. Butler points out that body is stillconsidered the foundation of gender when it comes to the division of principalagents in feminism, which pertains to the distinction of biological sex and socialgender. She searches for the deviation from the nature amidst the belief thatbody creates a false range called women as the main agents characterized bythe same range of the nature and homogeneous entity. As such, Butler attemptsseverance from series of presumptions which are referred to as ‘natural’ withinthe range of women. However, Butler’s analysis of power identified viadiscourse practice fails to explain how sex’s duality system and forcedheterosexism resulted historically as the governing norms. Given this weakness,complete separation from the myth of what is natural continues to remainunanswered.
