Taejoon Lee is one of the writers who expressed a distinct self-consciousness to language and writing. It is very important that he began to write novels earnestly by 1930s. Many factors worked as important momentums in completing his language consciousness: the burst of Manchurian incident in 1931, the establishment of standard Korean orthography in 1933, all-Korean language broadcasting of Kyeongseong Broadcasting Corporation, the activities of the Korean Language Society and the movement against illiteracy, the establishment of Department of Korean Literature in Kyeongseong Imperial University, discussion about treating Korean language as a local dialect, and so on. Lee was also influnced by Saussure’s linguistics theory through Heuiseung Lee’s studies: He adapted this linguistics theory into a base on which he created a literature language. Moreover, he confirmed the importance of Korean language and literature as an ethnic language by applying the logic of Japan’s national language. And his accomplishment such as confirming the importance of Korean language in building a nation-state and a nation was succeeded continually after Korean liberation from Japanese rule in 1945.
