Kim Dong-Sung and the History of Korean Translation of Sherlock Holmes Series

초창기의 언론인 김동성의 미국 유학 생활과 번역 및 저술 활동은 전혀 알려져 있지 않다. 이 연구에서는 먼저 김동성의 생애와 행적을 실증적으로 추적하여 숨은 면모를 새롭게 재평가할 수 있는 기반을 마련했다. 김동성의 연재소설 『붉은 실』은 아서 코난 도일의 셜록 홈스 시리즈 가운데 장편과 단편 다섯 편을 번역한 추리 소설이며, 영어 원작에서 직접 번역한 것으로도 매우 드문 사례다. 『동아일보』는 김동성을 통해 영미 정통 추리 소설을 선보임으로써 『매일신보』연재소설과 본격적으로 경쟁하기 시작했으며, 1910년대에 이루어진 추리 소설 번역과 차별화하는 데에도 성공했다. 이로써 1910년대의 『매일신보』연재소설과 1920년대 초반의 『동아일보』연재소설이 맺고 있는 연속성과 불연속성을 확인할 수 있다. 김동성의 『붉은 실』은 영미 추리 소설 번역의 역사에서 선구적이고 독보적인 자리를 차지했을 뿐만 아니라 한국의 창작 추리 소설이 지닌 역사적 성격을 문제 삼기 위한 새로운 실마리를 제공해 준다.

Kim Dong-Sung is a noted journalist in the colonial period. But his study in the United States and literary works are not known at all. Through investigating his hidden career and activities closely, this thesis takes the first step to reappraisal of him and his translation in early 1920’s. Bul-Geun-Sil(A Study in Scarlet) was a serial novel in Dong-A-Il-Bo. Kim Dong-Sung translated Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes Series from English. It was a result of the competition between both major daily newspapers, and was distinguished remarkably with adapted novels in 1910’s. That suggests the continuity and discontinuity of serial novels in both. Besides it stands unchallenged in the history of translation of detective novel, and provides a valuable clue toward the explanation for Korean detective novel.
