‘의식의 흐름’의 문학적 재현을 가능케 한 담론들의 한국적 수용은 무시할 수 없는 시차(時差)를 보여준다. 베르그송은 비교적 이른 시기인 1910년대부터 청년 지식인들의 사상적, 문화적 감수성에 심중한 영향력을 행사했고, 윌리엄 제임스와 아인슈타인은 『개벽』과 일본 유학생들에 의해 1920년대 전반부터 널리 소개되었지만, 정작 ‘의식의 흐름’ 기법의 유럽적 대가들인 제임스 조이스나 프루스트가 본격적으로 논의된 것은 1930년대 이후였다. 그럼에도 비교적 이른 베르그송 사상의 수용으로 인해 이미 1920년을 전후로 한 시기의 소설들에서 이 기법의 용례를 발견할 수 있다. 예컨대, 『무정』에 사용된 ‘의식의 흐름’은 근대적 자아를 형상화하는 데 중요하게 기여했다. 하지만 기차 안에서의 환상 체험을 위해 주인공으로 하여금 물리적인 시간대를 벗어나도록 했던 이광수는 삼랑진 이후 다시 문명, 미래, 진화 중심의 균질적인 시간대로 그를 복귀시켜 놓았다. 근대적인 시간 규율로 표준화되지 않는 심리적 시간들, 의식 심층에 현존하는 다채로운 기억의 잔상들, 달리 말해 계몽주의적 노선에서 배제되거나 이탈한 존재들에 대한 문학적 탐색은 「마음이 여튼 자여」와 「표본실의 청게고리」에서 진지하게 다루어졌다. 근대적 삶을 맹목적으로 추종하던 K는 자유연애가 실패로 돌아간 후 예기치 않게 유년 시절의 ‘잃어버린 기억’을 되찾게 됨으로써, 그리고 X는 고통스런 불면의 밤을 거듭하다 8년 전에 본 ‘해부된 개구리’ 이미지를 기억해냄으로써 비로소 진실한 자아를 찾아 떠나는 여정에 한 걸음 들어서게 된다. 하지만 ‘의식의 흐름’을 가장 전위적으로 실험한 이상(李箱)의 소설에 이르면 주인공의 의식에 떠오른 과거의 기억이란 더 이상 신성한 것이 못 된다. 『날개』가 보여준 득의의 성과는 ‘의식의 흐름’ 기법을 그 이전과 변별되는 방식으로 재전유하려는 노력에서 비로소 가능했다.
The stream of consciousness that was used in the Mujeong contributed greatly to the formation of the modern self. However, Lee Gwangsoo, who made the leading character get out of the physical time zone for experiencing the epiphany in the train, reinstated him to the homogenized time zone that is the center of the civilization, the future, and the evolution after the Samnangjin. The psychological time that would not be standardized by the law of the modern time and the afterimages of colorful memories that exist in the deep consciousness, that is, the literary explorations into beings that are isolated and excluded from the course of enlightenment have been seriously dealt in the Maeumi Yeoteun Jayeo and Pyobonsilui Cheonggyeguri. ‘K’ that blindly had followed the modern way of life took a step for finding true self by unexpectedly restoring the lost memories of the childhood after the failure of free love and ‘X’ that had repeated the sleepless nights finally started to find own true self by recalling the image of the dissected frog that had seen eight years before. However, in the novel of Lee Sang which had done most avant-garde experiment on the stream of consciousness, the past memories that emerged from the consciousness of leading characters could not be sacred any more. The triumphant achievement of Nalgae of Lee Sang could be won by the endeavor to re-appropriate the stream of consciousness through the discriminated way from the forerunners.
