『근대 국어교과서를 읽는다』(경진, 2014)는 2011년부터 2014년까지 20명이 넘는 연구자들이 지속적으로 근대 초기의 교과서라는 하나의 일관된 주제에 매달려 산출한 성과이다. 또한, 수록된 논문들은 모두 구체적인 문헌학 작업의 결과들로, 교과서와 계몽기 신지식의 형성의 실체를 보여주면서 “근대 문화의 뿌리”를 규명하는 생산적 논점을 제공한다. 근대의 국가의식, 계몽과 일제(日帝)의 압박, 근대의 여성과 아동교육, 한국어의 교과서적 기원 및 근대 문체의 전변 등을 다양한 교과서 텍스트를 통해 일별하면서도 ‘근대 문화의 뿌리’를 보여주겠다는 전체적 논지를 유지한 모범적인 공동저서라 하겠다. 특히 이 책은 교과서에 나타난 번역의 구체적 과정과 논리를 텍스트 비교분석을 통해 최초로 제시했다는 점에서 의미가 크다.
Reading Modern Korean Reader is the fruit of joint research by 20 more scholars study textbooks in modern enlightenment era, from 2011 to 2014. And included 14 articles, all based on philological works, endow productive issues for investigating “the root of modern culture” through revealing the actual formation of new knowledge and textbooks in early modern era. While reviewing diverse textbooks, Reading Modern Korean Reader depicts various issues such as early modern consciousness of state, enlightenment, the oppressing Japanese colonialism, education for women and children, the origin of modern Korean national language in textbooks and the transformations of styles. Especially it primarily, presents concrete aspects of translation in textbooks by comparing texts.
