The purpose of this study was to investigate group differences between theft male adolescents group and their normal male counterparts group as well as to verify the influence of sensation seeking and self-esteem on peer conformity. Subjects consisted of 116 theft male adolescents, who were recommended, under the judgment of police officer by the reason of their crimes being minor, to join correctional counseling program at Pusan Youth Counseling Institute instead of being sentenced to legal punishment among adolescents who were caught in the act of theft or were arrested without a warrant for theft. Their 123 counterparts were surveyed from adolescents attending middle and high schools in Gyeongnam province. For this purpose, scales were used including sensation seeking, self-esteem, and peer conformity and t-test, correlation, and regression analyses were employed. The results were as follows. a) There are significant differences in self-esteem and peer conformity between the theft group and their counterparts group. b) In the theft group, there were significant positive correlations between sensation seeking and peer conformity as well as negative correlations between self-esteem and peer conformity. In their normal counterparts group, there were significant positive correlations only between sensation seeking and peer conformity. c) In the theft group, based on multiple regression analysis, sensation seeking and self-esteem have significant influences on peer conformity with 24% explanability. In their normal counterparts group, sensation seeking only have a significant influence on peer conformity with 14% explanability. Based on these findings, conclusion and implications were discussed.
