외교시는 외교 관계의 긍정적 발전을 위한 사신 상호 간의 관계 개선 및 국제 관계에서의 문화적 우열을 판단하는 기준으로서의 중요성 때문에 외교 자료로서의 위상이 낮다고 할 수 없다. 따라서 공식적인 외교 자료의 작성에 당대 최고의 관각 문신을 동원하듯이 외교에는 최고의 시인들이 참여하였던 것이다. 필자는 다양한 외교의 상황에 따른 시의 창작을 바탕으로 하고, 전통적인 용어를 활용하여 아직까지 제대로 되지 못한 외교시의 범주를 설정하고 명확한 분류를 시도하였다. 그 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 국왕의 명령에 의해 상대국 관료 및 왕과 행하는 것만을 외교 행위로 인정한다. 이러한 범주에 속하는 외교시는 네 가지로 분류하고, 이에 속하지 않는 것은 기타로 처리한다. 이의 분류를 다시 보이면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 使行詩(외국으로 파견되는 사신의 시). 둘째, 送詩(외국으로 파견되는 사신을 보내는 시). 셋째, 接伴詩(외국 사신을 맞이하는 시). 넷째, 伴送詩(외국 사신을 보내는 시). 다섯째, 其他. 사행은 전송과 접반을 비롯한 국내의 노정과 상대국의 노정 모두를 포함한다. 대중국 외교의 경우 賓貢諸子와 같은 경우나 외교 행위에 해당되지 않는 중국 관료의 경우는 외교시의 범주에서 제외한다. 대일 외교의 경우는 승려가 중요 외교 담당층이었는데, 일본 승려의 입국에는 두 가지의 목적이 있었으니 순수 구도와 종교적 교유가 하나이고, 또 하나는 외교적 목적으로 입국하는 경우로서 후자의 경우를 외교시로 인정한다.


Diplomatic verses are not low in their status as a diplomatic material because it is significant as a criterion to judge cultural merits in international relationship and its role in promoting mutual relationship between envoys for the positive development of diplomatic ties. Therefore, top poets were involved in diplomacy much as the best civil ministers were called to draw up official documents. I tried to classify diplomatic verses still unclassified into clear categories by focusing on poetic creation according to various diplomatic situations and using traditional terms. The findings are as follows: Only the activities performed with the other country's king or government officials by order of the king are recognized as diplomatic ones. Diplomatic verses in such categories are classified into four kinds and exceptional verses are put into an extra category. The categories are as follows. First, poetry of an envoy's diplomatic tour poetry(verses written by an envoy on the way to a foreign country). Second, farewell poetry(verses for dispatching diplomatic representatives to a foreign country). Third, reception poetry(verses for receiving foreign envoys). Fourth, sending poetry(verses for sending foreign envoys). And fifth, exceptional one. Diplomatic missions include itineraries home and abroad in addition to sending and receiving envoys. In case of the diplomatic relationship with China, those taking official examinations in China from other countries and Chinese officials not performing diplomatic activities are excluded from diplomatic verses. In case of the diplomatic ties with Japan, Buddhist monks were chief diplomatic envoys. Japanese Buddhist monks had two purposes when they entered Korea. One was pure pursuit of truth and religious companionship and the other was diplomatic mission. Only the latter is recognized as diplomatic verses.
