This paper examines the role of corpora and corpus linguistics in foreign language education and teacher development. In two main areas, this paper discusses research and application of corpora in language education. First, this area surveys how corpora and corpus-based research can be exploited for syllabus design, materials development, and test construction. Second, this area examines how corpora can be utilized for teacher education in terms of language awareness-raising, as a source of reference, and for professional development. In both areas, I consider previous and ongoing work in the field, and draw on examples to illustrate the many ways corpora can be applied to language education and teacher development. I conclude this paper by examining how we as educators may move forward with the integration of corpora in the language classroom, which starts in fully acknowledging and promoting the expertise of language teachers.
