This article deals with the question whether John Calvin(1509-1564) developed histheology of mission during the Reformation in the Western Europe. There are differentpositions in Calvin Studies: Some argue that Calvin had no concern on mission, butothers argue that he devoted himself to the mission to Europe and Brazil. I would like toexamine Calvin's theology of mission by analyzing his understanding of other religions, especially Judaism and Islam. Calvin in his Institution emphasizes the continuity and discontinuity betweenJudaism and Christianity. His criterion of theological evaluation on Judaism and Jewswere their acceptance of Christ as the Lord. Concerning Islam and Muslim, Calvincriticizes the distortion of revelation in th Roman Catholicism and Islam in that theydepend on the authority of Pope or Muhammad. For Calvin, Jews and Muslims were notthe object of hatred and criticism, but the object of mission as sharing and serving. In conclusion, Calvin was the first theologian of mission in the Reformed Church. Geneva became the center of mission not only for Europe but also for Brazil. Calvin's theory of predestination helps Christians to teach the Christian messages to all the peoples in the world. Interdisciplinary studies and God centered approach to Calvin's thought will lead us to new directions in his theology of mission.
