A Visit to Kyoung-Sung(「京城遊覽記」), a story written in 1917, is a typical representation of the magazine The World of New Civilization(新文界). The editor of The World of New Civilization was a Japanese Takeouchi-rokunosuke, and its main suggestions were the colonial development through science and economy. However, science and economy alone couldn't offer the ideological basis for colonial modernization, then the imperialists leaned on the old tradition of Confucianism. The life improvement through economic success and the moral control through Confucianist ideal were recommended at the same time. A Visit to Kyoung-Sung expressed such a situation. Even though it was titled as a fiction, A Visit to Kyoung-Sung was much of a handbook to a city of Kyoung-Sung(today's Seoul), and its model visitor was an old scholar Yi. Yi, who was born a nobleman in Seoul but had left Seoul since 1894, met two people on the train to Seoul. One of them is a bank manager Kim, the other is a student Ueo. Kim and Ueo guided Yi in official sightseeing course, and Yi as a curious visitor was deeply impressed by the 20 year development. The old castle and wall had been destructed for modern transportation, and the trolley and automobile were running on the street, and furthermore, new buildings and stores were standing in line. Yi saw only the bright side of new Seoul, and the dark side remained unrevealed. The powerlessness of Yi showed the failure of 'new civilization' project. The project which depended on economic development and confucianist moral both turned into to be irrelevant in the new social space of Kyoung-Sung. Nevertheless, A Visit to Kyoung-Sung contributed for the establishment of literary convention which covered the countrymen's visits to Seoul.
