이 글은 먼저 사회변동이론의 발달 과정을 역사적으로 개관한 후, 1980년대 후반 이후 독점적 지위를 누리게 된 과학기술적 사회변동론의 형성과정과 핵심내용을 살펴본다. 이어서 토플러가 제시한 “제3물결” 론의 연장선상에서, 향후 20여 년간 인류사회를 혁명적으로 변화시킬 “제4물결”은 디지털기술에 의한 “디지털혁명”이라고 전망한다. 그리고 디지털혁명 이후 인류문명을 새로운 차원으로 바꾸게 될 제5물결은 어디에서 올 것인지 탐구한다. 여러 학자들의 미래전망을 바탕으로, 머지않아 파국과 도약의 기로에 서게 될 인류문명의 위기를 극복하고 오히려 한 단계 도약시킬 핵심적 요인은 “인간”이라고 분석한다. 미래의 새 물결은 테크놀로지가 아니라 인간의 지적 능력과 가치관에서 일어날 것이며, “제5물결”은 “인간혁명”이 될 것이라고 전망한다. 그리고 한국이 선진국으로 도약하기 위해서는 제5물결을 세계에 앞서 일으켜야 한다고 주장한다. 제5물결을 일으키기 위해서는 새로운 인간형인 “하이퍼 휴먼”이 나와야 함을 밝히고, 이들의 특성을 제시하며, 이를 위해 1차적 사회화과정에서 가장 중요한 대행자인 학교를 혁신해야 한다고 강조한다. 사회변동 추세에 부응하며 청소년들의 가치관과 행동양식에 적합한 미래의 교육제도를 창안해 내야 한다는 것이다. 끝으로 교육혁신에 대한 사회적 공감대를 형성하기 위해 국민의식에 대한 자성적 시민운동을 제안한다.
This paper reviews historically the development process of various theories on social change, examines how the technological theory was formed and rated as the most influential among social change theories, and analyzes what the core contents of the technological theory are. Extending the discussion of “the third wave” which Alvin Toffler initiated, this paper prospects that “the fourth wave” will be “digital revolution” which will bring forth revolutionary changes of human society for about twenty years from now on. Then it explores out of what factor “the fifth wave” rises. Based on researches of many futuristics scholars, this paper contends that the critical factor for the fifth wave will be human being. It means that the new wave in future rises from values and intellectual abilities of human being, and that the fifth wave will be “human revolution.” The author proposes that Korea initiates the fifth wave. This paper clarifies the characteristics of “hyper human” who will be able to initiate the fifth wave, and emphasizes the need of educational innovation in order to bring up hyper human. It contends that the educational institution of Korea must be innovated to meet the needs of new trends of social changes and new generations. Finally, it proposes a reflective social movement in order to arouse a public response for hyper human and educational innovation.
