이 글은 아감벤의 벌거벗은 생명이라는 개념에 기초하여 한국 대학생들의 삶을 성찰하고, 벌거벗은 생명이 어떤 윤리적 태도를 취해야 하는지에 관해 해명하려는 시도이다. 벌거벗은 생명은 가치 있는 ‘좋은 삶’이 아니라 생명 유지를 위한 ‘단순한 삶’을 살아가며, 공동체 내에서 어떤 법적, 제도적 보호도 받지 못하는 존재이다. 이와 같은 벌거벗은 생명의 윤리적 태도를 잘 보여주는 것이 바틀비의 거부이다. 그의 수동적 저항은 수많은 사회적 요구들을 거부함으로써 진정한 능동적 행위로 나아갈 수 있는 가능성을 열어 놓는다. 최근 대학생들의 삶을 반성했던 ‘김예슬 선언’은, 바틀비의 윤리를 실천한 하나의 사례이다.
This paper aims at rethinking Korean university students' lives based on the concept of Agamben's 'bare life' or 'Homo Sacer', and clarifying what should be a ethical attitude of bare life. Bare life doesn't mean a valuable 'good life', but a 'sheer life' for reproduction of a life without legal and institutional protection in a community. Bartleby's rejection("I would prefer not to") shows bare life's ethical attitude. His passive resistance opens the potentialities to proceed a true activity by rejecting a number of social demands. 'Kim Ye-Seul's manifesto' which is reflected on Korean university students' life is a case of Bartleby's ethics.
