토함산 석불사 보현보살상은 盛唐양식의 영향을 받아 인체의 감각적인 아름다움을 사실적으로 재현하는 한편, 거기에 여러 가지 형태변화를 가하여 중국 조각의 世俗性과 官能性을 止揚하고 종교적 敬虔함과 숭고한 아름다움을 부여하였다. 그리하여 인체가 당당하고 화려하게 그 자태를 드러내면서도 현실 인체에서는 볼 수 없는 종교적 敬虔함과 숭고한 분위기가 작품 전체를 지배하고 있다. 인체의 감각적인 아름다움을 유지하면서도 정신적, 종교적 깊이를 體現한다라고 하는 실로 도달하기 어려운 경지에 이르러 있는 작품으로 감각과 정신, 현실과 초월이라는 상반된 세계관이 한 작품 안에서 서로 무르녹듯이 융합해 있는 것을 볼 수 있다. 본존상이 正覺에 도달한 여래의 정신적 깊이를 여러 가지 형식주의적인 틀을 이용하여 엄정한 형태로 시각화하고 있는 데에 비해서 보현보살상에서는 보다 인간적인 면모를 살려서 표현하는 데에 초점을 맞추고 있다. 위로는 菩提를 구하고 아래로는 중생을 교화한다라고 하는 보살의 존재를 시각화하는 데에 따르는 필연적인 선택이었던 것으로 여겨진다. 본존상에 이어 보현보살상, 그리고 따로 분석하게 될 십일면관음상의 고찰을 통해 토함산 석불사 불상을 조성한 장인이 얼마만큼 주도면밀하게 재현할 대상의 성격과 종교적인 의미를 이해하고 있었는가, 또 각 존상의 정신적 내용을 얼마만큼 완벽하게 심미적 형태로 시각화하고 있는가 하는 것이 새삼 이해되었다.
