본 연구는 전통사찰의 입지선정에 있어서 중요한 의미를 가지는 풍수가 송광사의 입지에 어떤 모습으로 반영되었고 활용되었는지 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 선종의 전통적 택지법을 바탕으로 산수조화를 이룬 곳에 송광사를 건설하였다. 더 나아가 불교가 추구하는 깨달음의 세계를 완성하는데 있어서, 풍수가 추구하는 가장 핵심적인 혈처를 활용하는 노련함을 보여주고 있다. 또한 건축물의 배치에 따른 공간구성은 법계도의 모양에 따랐고, 요사의 이름 역시 법계도의 내용에 따르는 모습은 불교적 사상을 완성하는데 있어 풍수와 절묘한 결합을 이루어냈다고 할 수 있다. 즉, 불교와 풍수는 각각 합리적인 상황논리를 반영하였고, 송광사 공간구성과 입지선정에 있어서 방향설정의 기준점으로 작용하였다.

In this study, how Feng shui, that has an important meaning to the location selection of the Korean traditional temple, was applied to Songgwangsa temple site is discussed. The temple Songgwangsa was constructed in a place within very harmonious landscape by being used with a traditional land use principles of Zen Buddhism. More over, to reach the state of nirvana and complete the inner world with spiritual enlightenment land acupuncture point, which called Heoyl(穴), was applied for its location selection. And its spatial organization reflected from building disposition and the name of its temple dormitory building was complied with Beopgyedo(法界圖, a drawing of commandments in Buddhism). So, to complete Buddhism idea, Feng shui was delicately combined with it. Feng shui was rationally used to be a standard for location selection and spatial organization of Songgwangsa Temple.
