호르바트(Ődőn von Horváth)의 소설 『영원한 속물』(Der ewige Spießer)은 발간 당시 일종의 세태소설로 가볍게 취급되었지만, 1970년대 이후 당대 사회에 대한 세밀한 풍속화로서, 특히 독일 소시민의 의식 속에서 진행되는 파시즘의 내면화과정을 보여주는 사회학적 보고서로서, ‘현대문학의 고전’으로 격상되었다. 이 소설의 장점과 묘미는 심오한 주제나 치밀한 줄거리의 구성, 격조 높은 문장이 아니라 별 볼일 없는 서민 대중, 어중이떠중이들의 상투적이고 단순한 말투와 불합리하고 대중할 수 없는 사고방식과 행동양식을 있는 그대로 생생하게 보여주는 세태묘사와 세태풍자에 있다. 그리고 이를 통해 당시 독일사회를 지배하던 맹목적인 속물적 편향들, 이를테면 반유태주의와 인종주의, 전체주의, 반공의식, 가부장적 남성우월주의 등 이른바 파시즘적 대중심리를 세밀하게 드러내 보여준다는 점에서 이 작품은 풍속소설의 자질을 갖추고 있다. 이 소설에서 호르바트는 민중극에서와 마찬가지로 속물인 등장인 물들이 나누는 대화를 통해 자기도 모르게 숨겨진 속내를 드러내도록 하는 기법을 주로 사용한다. 독자적인 사고의 능력이 없는 소시민들은 부르주아적 교양을 나타내는 말이건, 아니면 전후맥락과는 어긋나거나 아무 생각 없이 인용하는 이데올로기의 파편이건 가리지 않고, 아무데서나 자의적으로 기성품적인 상투적 표현들에 의존한다. 때로는 계급탈락의 상처를 보상받기 위해, 때로는 계급상승을 확인하고 과시하기 위해 이들은 이른바 ‘교양은어’(Bildungsjargon)를 남용한다. 호르바트는 이를 통해 단순히 소시민의 허위의식을 폭로하는 데 그치지 않고, 독자로 하여금 자신이 소시민의식에 물들어 있는 속물이 아닌지 성찰하도록 유도한다. 이 작품에 등장하는 가장 생동감 넘치는 인물은 경제적 궁핍과 사회적 혼란, 가부장적 남성중심주의의 희생자인 단순한 사고방식의 아가씨, 즉 폴링거 양이다. 대공황으로 실직한 이 사무실 여직원은 우여곡절 끝에 결국 창녀로까지 전락한다. 바이마르공화국의 온갖 모순과 소시민의 허위의식은 호르바트의 경우 무엇보다도 여성들의 언행과 운명 속에서 드러난다. 호르바트에 따르면, 바이마르 공화국 시기에 급속히 확산된 파 시즘적 경향은 히틀러라는 외부의 요인에 의해서가 아니라 독일 소시민 계층의 의식 속에 내장되어 있던 어떤 성향이 사회경제적 요인에 의해 허위의식으로 숙성되어 표출된 결과일 뿐이다.

The genre novel of Ödön von Horváth, Der ewige Spießer(The everlasting Snob) was at first evaluated as a pulp fiction by most critics. But after 1970 it was revaluated as the Computed Tomogram of the every day life of the Weimar Republic, and was established as one of the Modern Classic. The originality and attraction of this novel derive from the vulgar talks and behaviors of the snobs and common people which reveal and visualize the internalizing process of fascism in the consciousness of the German peti- bourgeoisie. The characters of this novel, who without exception consist of snobs and peti-bourgeoisie, betray their consciousness through the dialogues likewise the characters of his Voksstücke(Folk-Plays). These snobs can not think for themselves and express themselves by means of their own words. They depend on the ready-made phrases, named as Bildungsjargon by the author. The most vivid and attractive character of the novel is Miss Anna Pollinger, the helpless victim of sexual exploitation, economic crisis and social instability. She loses her job in the Great Depression and finally sinks to prostitution after some ups and downs of life. The contradictions and false consciousness of the peti-bourgeoisie in Weimar Republic reveal themselves most remarkably in the life style and behavior of an office girl like Miss Pollinger. According to Horváth, the rapid growth and spread of fascism in the Weimar Republic was accelerated not so much by the demagogy of the Hitler clique as the false consciousness and snobbism of the peti-bourgeoisie. Der ewige Spießer illustrates a kaleidoskopic view of the snobs of the Weimar Republic and illuminates how such tendencies as anti-semitism, racism, totalitarianism,anti-communism, patriarchal sado-masochism within the false consciousness of peti-bourgeoisie ferment, develop, and crystallize to fascism.
