이 글은 대관령 산신제가 강릉단오제 형성에 영향을 미쳤고 원형성을 담보하고 있다는 가정에서 출발한다. ‘천년 단오’라는 슬로건을 제공한 『고려사』의 기록을 정밀하게 검토하고 이어 고려 말부터 조선 초까지 성행했던 기은제를 통해 산신제의 원형적 모습을 확인하여 가설을 증명하고자 했다. 『고려사』의 기록은 대관령 치제를 비롯하여 ‘이승사’라는 단서를 남겼다. 본 연구는 이승사가 당시 지장선원(현 보현사)임을 주장하면서 대관령 일원이 성역화 되고, 이어서 민중들의 기도처로 변화하는 과정을 설명하였다. 당시 선종사찰은 집단으로 생활하면서 기도하는 방식으로 운영되고 있어 공동체 신앙으로 발전할 가능성이 농후하다. 또한 려말선초의 기은제는 왕실과 지배층의 문화였지만 서민들에게 전해지면서 공동체 신앙의 초석이 된다. 더욱이 기은제를 무교에서 주관함으로써 무교는 예전과는 다른 위상을 갖게 되었고, 성황사의 건립 위치와 민중들의 성향을 이해할 수 있다. 또 산신제와 기은제가 서로 영향을 주고받으며 민중들에게 뿌리내리는 과정을 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 과정에서 무교의 성장은 민간신앙이 자리매김하는데 공헌하였다. 남효온이 남긴 영동민속 기록은 기은제의 유풍을 간직한 산신제의 원형성을 보여주는 것으로 이해할 수 있다. 그러므로 당시 강릉단오제 산신제도 이와 다르지 않을 것이라는 판단이 본 연구의 결론이다.
This study is based on an assumption that mountain god ritual has an original form and identity of Gangneung Danojae. Record of ‘Goryeosa’ which has offered a popular slogan ‘Cheonnyeon dano’, and Gieunjae, which was prevalent between late Koryo to early Chosun dynasty, are examined closely to identify several original features of mountain god ritual. ‘Goryeosa’ reveals some clues such as DaeGwanryeong Chijae and Iseungsa Shrine. This study proves that Iseungsa Shrine is Bohyeonsa. Also, it explains how the whole Daegwanryeong region becomes sacred ground and a good place for prayer. Gieunjae had used to be for the ruling class however, it was brought to ordinary people, strengthening the basis of community belief. Moreover, Gieunjae shows a tendency of the people and a fine location for Seonghwangsa. It is clear that mountain god ritual and Gieunjae were influenced by each other, and affected the public. Development of Shamanism contributed to stabilization of a folk belief. Therefore, record of folklore of Yeongdong area which is written by Nam Hyoon can be considered as an original form of mountain god ritual that has some Gieunjae tradition in terms of a shaman conducts the ceremony with the residents who used to provide the offering for the ceremony. In conclusion, it was difficult to tell the difference between the mountain god ritual ofGangneung Danojae and the mountain god ritual that has some Gieunjae tradition in those days.
