<吳後姜傳>은 근래에 발굴, 소개된 작품으로 19세기 한문중단편소설의 일단을 살펴보기에 충분한 작품이라 판단된다. 본고에서는 <오후강전>의 서사방식과 인물 형상을 중심으로 논의를 전개하였다. 우선 <오후강전>의 서사방식을 두 가지 측면에서 분석하였다. 첫째는 작품의 서사구조가 愛情談과 軍談이 결합된 방식으로 구성되어 있는데, 이것은 당대 유행하던 국문소설의 서사방식과 함께 才子佳人小說의 서사방식을 적극 차용한 결과로 이해할 수 있다. 특히 이점은 한문소설이 대중성의 측면을 일정부분 고려한 차원에서 연유된 것으로 이해되며, 통속적 흥미성을 고려한 바탕에서 설정된 구도로 파악된다. 이는 19세기 한문중단편소설이 ‘흥미성’에 대한 고민을 하고 있었음을 보여주는 것이라 생각된다. 두번째는 서사의 핵심 축인 金海甲과 吳後姜, 桂月 사이의 남녀결연양상이 뒤틀린 형태로 전개되고 있음이 확인된다. 비의도적 트릭에 의해 남녀주인공의 결연관계가 엇갈리며 이로 인해 결연이 遲延되는 서사가 포착되는데, 이러한 측면에서 <오후강전>의 인물결연방식은 애정전기의 서사문법을 일정부분 패러디한 흔적이 엿보인다. 때문에<오후강전>의 결연양상은 여타 작품들과 구별되는 성격을 가지고 있음이 주목된다. 다음으로 등장인물의 인물형상에 주목하였다. 작품은 김해갑과 오후강, 계월 이들 3명에 의해 서사가 진행되며 이들의 관계양상이 작품을 추동해나가는 핵심역할을 하고 있다. 특히 주동인물인 이들 3명 가운데 桂月의 인물 형상에 주목할 필요가 있는데, 계월은 큰 틀에서 김해갑과 오후강의 결연을 위한 매개자로서 기능이 우선 주어진 역할로 보인다. 하지만 단순히 매개자의 역할만을 수행하지 않으며 김해갑과 최초로 결연을 맺는 여성주체로써의 기능도 함께 가지는 인물형상을 보여준다. 때문에 계월은 주체이자 매개자인 이중적 역할을 수행하고 있는 점에서 주목할 만 하다. 이처럼 본고는 <오후강전>을 통해 19세기 한문중단편소설의 특징적 국면을 간취해 본 것이나, 이는 작품의 일부분을 살펴본 것에 지나지 않으며 추후 구체적인 논의를 통해 소설사적 위상을 다각도로 분석할 필요가 있을 것으로 판단된다.

This paper is study on narritive method and person shape of <Oh-hoo- kang-jeon> produced in 19th century. <Oh-hoo-kang-jeon> was recently discovered and published. I see it as important to focus on relationship and character formation. First of all, This work was used narration method of ‘trick’ and ‘Crisscross’. the relationships between kim-hae-kab, oh-hoo-kang, and ke-weal are tangled throughout storyline. Unintentional tricks cause hardships between main male and female characters so the relationship becomes twisted. The tangled relationship delays the progress of relationships between them as well as the whole storyline, which is regarded to have mimicked grammar of narration of love storyline. Due to this aspect, <Oh-hoo-kang-jeon>has unique properties that set it apart from other novels. Second, character development should be taken into consideration. The story line is driven by the relationships between three characters, kim-hae-kab, oh-hoo-kang, and ke-weal. Ke-weal is an especially important character among the three individuals. Ke-weal seems to help kim-hae-kab and oh-hoo-kang relate to each other. However, ke-weal is not only a medium between kim-hae-kab and oh-hoo-kang but also an independent female. Thus ke-weal is a unique character in that she plays two roles: an independent character and a relating medium. Likewise, this paper discusses characteristic aspects of 19th century medium-length novels written in Chinese by examining <Oh-hoo- kang-jeon>. Because this paper is only evaluating one novel out of the whole genre, it is necessary to analyze the historic aspects of the novel through specific discussion in the future.
