Gift Exchange and Belief System Between the Living and the Dead: The Case Study of Funerals of Tana Toraja in South Sulawesi, Indonesia

이 글은 인도네시아 남 술라웨시(South Sulawesi)의 따나 또라자(Tana Toraja) 지역의 장례식을 대상으로 산자와 죽은 자의 선물 교환과 믿음체계 사이의 상호 관계에 대한 기술과 분석을 통해 산자와 죽은 자 사이의 거래의 경제적, 문화적 특징과 그 의미를 고찰하기 위한 것이다. 또라자의 장례식은 죽은 자를 위해 산 자들이 정성과 제물을 들이는 증여와 거래의 현장이다. 그리고 그러한 증여와 거래가 발생하는 이유는 공동체 내 자신의 사회적 지위와 결부되기 때문이다. 장례식에서 산 자들은 죽은 자를 애도하기 위해서만 물소나 돼지와 같은 제물을 선물하는 것이 아니다. 그것은 장래를 위한 투자이기도 하다. 장례식은 산 자와 죽은 자와의 증여와 거래를 매개로 하여, 죽은 자와 산 자, 그리고 산 자들 사이의 유대를 더욱 강화하고 돈독하게 하는, 소위 친목과 유대의 장인 것이다. 장례식에서 선물을 가져 온 사람들의 이름이 호명된다는 점에서, 이는 조문객들로서는 생전에 죽은 자에게 입었던 은혜를 갚는 것이고, 훗날에 죽은 자의 후손들에게 그에 대한 보답이나 답례를 기대할 수 있다는 점에서, 장례식은 산 자와 죽은 자, 산 자들 사이의 증여와 거래가 이루어지는 문화 현장인 것이다.

This study is examine the cultural characteristics and meanings of interrelationships between gift exchange and belief system of the living and the dead, with special reference to the description and analysis of funerals in Tana Toraja, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The funerals in Tana Toraja is a cultural field in gift exchange and transaction between the living and the dead. The cultural characteristics and meanings of the gift exchange and transaction between the living and the dead have close relationships with social status of the dead and the living in Tana Toraja. The gift exchange and transaction in funerals of Tana Toraja is regarded as the investment for the living to the dead, as well as the belief system to mourn the dead by the living. The funerals in this region are the cultural fields to strengthen and reinforce the interrelationships and inter-solidarities between the living and the dead through the gift exchange and transaction of buffalos and pigs. between the living and the dead. In this sense, the funerals of Tana Toraja in South Sulawesi, Indonesia can be recognized as the cultural fields for the gift exchange and belief system between the living and the dead, Those fields are not a fixed entity, but a changing reality continuously.
