고대 퓌론주의는 몽테뉴 시기부터 서구 지성사의 지도에 지울 수 없는 입지점을 확립하였다. 섹스투스 엠피리쿠스의 저작의 재발견과 재흡수가 근세 철학의 전개에 주요한 요인이었다면, 몽테뉴의 수상록은 이런 진전에 기폭제 역할을 하였다. 『수상록』의 핵심적인 부분을 차지하고 있는 「레이몽 스봉의 변호」는 퓌론주의 논변의 진가(眞價)를 동시대인들이 자각하게 만들었으며, “어떻게 퓌론주의와 관계를 설정할 것인가?”하는 피할 수 없는 물음 앞에서 하나의 중요한 방안을 제시하였다. 유서 깊은 신앙주의의 전통에 서 있었던 몽테뉴는 고대 퓌론주의자들의 논변을 통해 신앙으로 나아가는 철학적 근거를 주제화한 점에서 특히 두드러졌다. 단순히 반지성적인 태도를 취하거나 철학적 의견들의 가변성이나 상이성을 지적하는 데 그치지 않고, 몽테뉴는 고대 퓌론주의자들을 좇아 “왜 우리가 사물의 본성을 원리적으로 알 수 없는가?”를 제시함으로써 우리가 도저히 퓌론주의의 의심을 돌파할 수 없음을 정면으로 보여주었던 것이다. 나는 몽테뉴의 신앙주의가 이렇게 철학적인 회의적 논변과 연계됨으로써 매우 중요한 시사점을 던져 주고 있다고 생각한다. 그것은 근세의 “소위 ‘이성의 시대’에 어떻게 (얼핏 이성과는 대립되는) ‘신앙의 시대’가 버젓이 병존하고 각축을 벌일 수 있었는가?”하는 물음이 퓌론주의를 통하지 않고서는 온전히 해명될 수 없다는 것이다. 근세 철학은 한편으로는 퓌론주의를 논박하려고 하는가 하면 다른 한편으로는 퓌론주의를 옹호하려는 팽팽한 경쟁과 긴장의 이중주 속에서 전개되었다. 몽테뉴의 「레이몽 스봉의 변호」는 퓌론주의를 반박하려는 시도가 관심의 초점이 되었던 “17세기 이후에도 어떻게 신앙주의가 근세 철학의 한 축을 담당할 수 있었는가?”에 대한 전형적인 단서를 제공하고 있다. 나아가 그것은 “어떻게 퓌론주의와 적절한 관계를 맺을 것인가?”하는 난제의 해결을 위한 하나의 철학적 응답을 암시하고 있다. 회의주의를 극복하는 데 있어 그 지향점을 인식 안이 아니라 인식 바깥으로 돌리게 한 측면을 간과한 채 몽테뉴가 갖는 철학사적 의의를 논할 수는 없다고 나는 생각한다.
It is now apparent that the ancient pyrrhonism was established as a permanent feature on the intellectual map of modern Europe at the time of Montaigne. The rediscovery and the reassimilation of the Sextus Empiricus writings had an significant impact on the development of modern philosophy, and in especial The Essays of Montaigne did. This book made modern thinkers recognize the power of pyrrhonian argumentations. Among many traditional fideists Montaigne was remarkable in the topicalization of philosophical ground in fideism using by ancient pyrrhonian argumentations. Entirely depending on pyrrhonists, he showed the reason why we could not know the real nature of things and why we had to take the position of faith. The Essays suggested that the question of “how the age of faith was coexistent in the so-called the age of reason” could not be sufficiently explicated without referring to pyrrhonism. Above all, it pointed out the way of solving a difficult philosophical problem, “what is an appropriate relation to pyrrhonism?”, “how we overcome skepticism?”. I think that we can not appreciate the philosophical significance of Montaigne's thought unless we consider that he had modern philosophers pay attention to the outside of knowledge in responding to sceptical challenge.
