본 연구는 연구윤리와 사회적 가치와의 상관관계를 논구한다. 특히 연구윤리의 사회적 함의를 드러내는 데 그 목적이 있다. 본 연구가 주목하고 있는 핵심문제는 새롭게 제기되고 있는 연구윤리의 문제설정을 이해하고, 이를 포괄적인 사회적 책임의 맥락에서 제기해 보는 것이다. 이 목표를 위해 본 연구는 ‘책임 있는 연구 수행’이라는 연구윤리목표를 분석하고 그 철학적 함의를 찾아볼 것이다. 이는 두 가지 방향에서 전개된다. 하나는 기존의 연구자의 온전성 덕목이 귀속 책임 개념과 긴밀하게 연관되어 있다는 것을 강조하는 것이고, 다른 하나는 이에 대한 비판을 통해 새로운 연구윤리 정립에 필요한 책임개념을 추적해 보는 것이다. 이를 위해서 사회적 책임과 연구윤리와의 내적 연결고리를 찾는 것이 중요하다. 따라서 본 연구는 스트로슨 책임 논의의 도움을 받아 전통적인 귀속 책임논의에서 찾아볼 수 없는 진전된 형태의 응답책임개념을 이끌어보고, 이 개념을 연구윤리에 내재된 사회적 책임과 연관시켜 보려고 시도할 것이다. 이를 뒷받침하기 위해 본 연구는 라투어 논의를 긍정적으로 검토할 것이다. 연구수행이 사회화과정과 분리될 수 없다는 그의 논의를 제한적으로 수용하면서 본 연구는 우리의 맥락에서도 과학연구 수행에 대한 실증적인 검토가 이루어져야 한다고 주장할 것이다. 그러면서도 본 연구는 온전성 덕목이 사회에 관한 필요충분조건이 될 수 없다는 롤즈의 논변을 적극적으로 옹호하면서 사회정의의 관점에서도 연구윤리가 조망되어야 한다고 결론지을 것이다.오랫동안 확립된 가치관에 대한 사회적 불신과 신념이 상실될 경우 온전성 덕목들, 즉 신의(truthfulness)와 성실(sincerity), 정심(lucidity)과 서약(commitment), 또는 혹자의 말대로 진정성(authenticity)에 의지하는 경향이 생긴다. 만일 누구도 무엇이 옳은지를 모르는 경우, 적어도 우리는 우리의 소신을 나름대로 우리 자신의 것으로 할 수 있으며, 타인이 우리에게 제공한 대로 그 신념을 받아들이지 않을 수 있다. 만일 전통적인 도덕규칙들이 더 이상 적절하지도 않고 어떤 것이 그 위치를 대신할 수 있는지 합의할 수 없을 때, 우리는 어떻게 해서든지 명석한 두뇌로 어떻게 처신해야 하는지 결정할 수 있으며, 이미 우리에게 어떤 것이 결정되어 있고 우리가 어떤 권위를 받아들여야 한다는 생각을 저버릴 수 있게 된다. 그런데 물론 온정성 덕목들도 덕목이며 자유로운 인격의 탁월성중의 하나의 덕목이다. 그러나 그 덕목들은 필요한 것이지 충분한 것은 아니다. 왜냐하면 이 덕목들의 정의를 살펴보면 어떤 내용이라도 거의 허용하고 있기 때문이다. 즉 폭군도 이러한 속성들을 뛰어나게 드러낼 수 있다. 그렇게 함으로써 정치적 구실이나 운명을 변명삼아 자기기만 없이 어떤 매력을 발산할 수 있다. 이러한 덕목만 가지고는 도덕적 관점을 구성하기란 불가능하다. 그것은 형식상의 덕목들로서 어떤 의미에서 2차적인 것이다. 그러나 적절한 정의관, 즉 올바르게 이해된 자율성과 객관성을 줄 수 있는 관점과 결합될 때 그 덕목들이 제 역할을 할 수 있다.

This essay aims to shed light on the philosophical foundation of research ethics by investigating its connection to social values. This essay begins with an analysis of the aim of research ethics, which is contained in the definition of research ethics as promoting researchers to perform a responsible conduct of research. Traditional approach has been based on familiar philosophical concepts such as “integrity” and “moral responsibility.” Particularly, a notion of integrity has been a guideline for the performance of responsible conduct of research. I argue that this approach is unfounded, because there is no way to confront social conflicts. I contend that we need a new concept of responsibility as accountability, which helps us to reasonably resolve social conflicts. More specifically, it is argued that Strawson’s analysis of freedom and resentment on the basis of “reactive attitude” offers us a new way of dealing with social responsibility and collective responsibility. Another argument to support my thesis can be found in Latour’s comments on laboratory life. Based on his observation of the role of laboratory in society and the status of power in scientific research, I argue that justice would play a pivotal role in lessening conflicts in scientific research as well as restoring the integrity of scientific research.
