The US-ROK alliance is usually described and discussed in realist terms, when the proper basis for doing so for some time now has been liberalist. The alliance is lodged within a larger US-ROK community, in much the same way as other US alliances are arranged. It is also lodged within the community of democratic states that champion democratic peace theory, which essentially has come to constitute an informal but quite powerful alliance of all modern democratic states. The nature of modern liberalist alliances is such that they are very resilient, very durable, and this has helped sustain the alliance through roughly a decade of considerable strain in recent years. The alliance is now being refurbished with American global security management concerns in mind and this will require major adjustments by South Korea.
