우리사회에 넘쳐나는 ‘연애지상주의’ 담론과 신자유주의가 만들어낸 ‘연애불능’이라는 현실 속에서 대학생들은 어떻게 사랑을 확인하고 어떤 방식으로 성을 실천하고 있을까? 이 글은 대학생들의 연애경험과 성의 실천방식을 살펴봄으로써 신자유주의에 점령된 후기근대사회에서 성적 친밀감이 가진 의미를 가늠해보려는 것이다. 과거에 비해 다양한 선택지와 자유가 주어지지만 결과에 대한 책임 역시 오롯이 개인에게 부과되는 신자유주의 시대에, 대학생들의 성적 경험은 이전처럼 도덕과 규범에 대한 순응이냐 저항이냐 라는 이분법적 기준으로는 파악될 수 없으며 보다 복잡한 양상으로 전개되고 있다. 끊임없이 스스로를 관리하고 계발할 것을 강요받는 대학생들은 자신의 선택이 가져올 위험을 누구보다도 잘 알기에 규범에 자발적으로 종속되는 모습을 보인다. 하지만 동시에 그들은 스스로가 주체가 되어 결정하고 행동하는 ‘딱 그만큼만’ 자유로울 수 있는 현실에 대해서도 충분히 고려한다. 그러므로 신자유주의 시대 대학생들은 여전히 우리사회의 도덕적 규범과 윤리적 시선에 신경을 쓰고 얽매인다는 점에서는 사회적으로 구성된 주체에 머물러 있는 듯 보인다. 하지만 대학생들은 상대방과의 계속적인 협상과 합의를 거쳐 성 관계 여부를 결정한다거나 성경험을 친밀감 형성의 필수적인 요소로 간주하는 모습, 그리고 성적 욕망을 해소할 전략적 공간으로 모텔을 전유하고 복합적 기능을 가진 공간으로 적극적으로 활용하는 모습에서 새로운 행위성의 주체로 해석될 가능성도 동시에 안고 있다.
How do college students understand love, and in which way do their sexual practices change in the discourse of the ‘love for love’s sake’ and in the reality of the ‘impossibility of love’ that is produced by neoliberalism in the Korean society? This study examines experiences of love and sexual practices of college students with a focus on the use of motels and analyzes the meaning of sexual intimacy in a postmodern society which is dominated by neoliberalism. In the age of neoliberalism, various options and the freedom of choice are given to college students, but they also have to take responsibility for the decisions they make. In this situation, college students’ sexual experiences cannot be understood in a dichotomy of adaption of or resistance to existing sexual morals and norms. Their sexual experiences are developing in more complicated ways. College students seem to remain socially constructed subjects where they still tend to stick to traditional moral norms and ethical views. But, at the same time, they can be interpreted as subjects of new agency, because they decide sexual relations through continuous compromises and mutual consent with their partners and treat sexual activity as an indispensable factor of experiencing intimacy, and because they appropriate motels as a strategic space for the satisfaction of their sexual desire and they use motels actively as a multi-functional space.
