바슐라르는 과학철학에 대한 탁월한 연구뿐만 아니라 상상력에 대한 연구로도 유명하다. 과학적 사유와 연관성이 깊은 ‘불’이라는 심상에 대해서 연구서를 낸 바슐라르는, 곧이어 ‘물’의 심상에 대한 연구를 수행함으로써 인간의 상상력이 지니는 물질성에 대해 좀 더 깊게 천착해 들어간다. 본 연구에서는 바슐라르의『물과 꿈』제1∼제3장을 중심으로 바슐라르가 전개했던 ‘물’에 의해 야기되는 심상들이 어떤 식으로 서로 간에 연관성이 있는지에 대해서 살펴볼 생각이다. 이 책에서 바슐라르는 물이 지니는 표면과 깊이의 대립 안에서 인간의 영혼이 체험하는 삶과 죽음의 변증법을 보여주는 한편, 물의 심상이 관여하는 상상을 통해 죽음을 극복하는 동시에 아름다움을 꿈꾸는 인간 존재에 대한 깊은 성찰을 보여주고 있다. 우리는 바슐라르의 이러한 성찰을 보다 도식화시켜 <(물의) 표면-삶-나르시스-아름다움-백조-형상적 상상력>과 <(물의) 심연-죽음-죽어가는 어머니-우울-히드라-물질적 상상력>이라는 이중의 계열로 재구성해보았다이와 같은 이중의 계열은 <카론의 콤플렉스>와 <오필리어 콤플렉스>에 의해 변증법적 종합을 이루게 된다. 결론에서 우리는 바슐라르가 드러내는 상상력의 두 축인 형상적 상상력과 물질적 상상력이 주는 ‘종합의 상상력’, 다시 말해 ‘열린 상상력’의 가능성에로 나아가는 길을 제시해보고자 하였다.
Bachelard is known for his own property studies of scientific philosophy and of philosophy of imagination. He pursued Fire-image which is related with the scientific ways of thinking, and after then he accomplished l'eau et les rêves(water and dream) that is dealt of Image of water. one of the four elements for imagination. There is the relationship of the images of water from Bachelard's work of l'eau et les rêves, especially in the premier to the third chapter. In these chapters, Bachelard showed us the dialectic movement between Life and Death in images of water. With his contemplating the opposition between the surface and the profound of water that correspond with the life and death, he insists that this dialectic imagination make it possible that the human get up to attain to the Beauty itself in the Cosmos. And we shed light on his ambiguity in images of water, which is consisted in the two schemes from one Image of water: <surface - life - Narcissus - beauty - swan - formal imagination> and <profound - death - dying mother - melancholy - hydra - material imagination>. In the conclusion, we come up the human imagination come into being by intermixture of the formal cause and the material cause.
