Effects of Regional Feelings upon the Party Support in Korea

이 연구는 2010년 시행된 전국표본면접조사 자료의 통계적 분석을 통해 지역민 호감도가 정당지지에 미치는 영향력을 검토하였다. 그 결과 호남 지역민과 영남 지역민에 대해 개인이 갖는 호감도가 한나라당과 민주당 지지에 유의한 영향을 미쳤으며, 그 크기는 출신지역 변수와 지역발전에 대한 기대변수의 효과를 통제한 이후에도 매우 크게 나타났다. 지역민 호감도가 정당지지에 미치는 영향력은 호남인과 영남인뿐만 아니라, 서울․경기인과 충청인들에서도 매우 강하게 나타났다. 이는 지역민 간에 집단적으로 나타나는 대립과 갈등의 감정이 존재하지 않더라도, 개인적으로 갖는 호오감과 같은 지역감정이 정당지지에 영향을 미칠 수 있다는 것을 보여준다. 이와 더불어 지역민 호감도의 영향력은 정당 간 정책 차이의 존재 여부와 무관하다는 것이 발견되었다. 이러한 결과는 앞으로 한국의 지역적 투표 행태를 설명하는 데 있어서 그동안 주목받지 못했던 심리문화적 요인에 관한 연구에 보다 많은 관심을 기울일 필요가 있음을 보여주는 것이다.

This study measures the effect of regional feelings upon the party support in Korea based upon statistical analyses of national survey data in 2010. One's personal feelings toward Honam and Youngnam people strongly affect one's support for the GNP(Grand National Party) and the DP(Democratic Party), even after effects of regional origin and concern for regional development are controlled. Effects of regional feelings upon the party support are robust in that they are strong not only among Honam and Youngnam people but among Seoul-Kyunggi and Chungcheong people. Those who consider the Korean parties ideologically differentiated also vote for regionalism, which suggests that regionalism in the Korean election is likely to remain strong in the foreseeable future.
