이 논문은 일제 말 창씨개명 직후에 나온 족보들을 검토함으로써, 창씨개명 정책에 대한 지역 종족집단의 대응 전략을 분석한 것이다. 특히 모든 종족원의 창씨명을 기재한 충남지역의 작은 지역 종족집단(장하리 강씨)의 가보(晉州姜氏家譜)를 주된 자료로 하고, 다른 족보들은 이를 보충하는 자료로 삼았다. 이를 통해 우리는 일제의 창씨개명 정책에 대한 종족집단의 대응의 한 단면을 구체적으로 이해할 수 있다. 장하리 강씨 족보의 경우 모든 종족원들의 창씨명이 이름위에 부기되어 있다. 반면 다른 족보의 경우는 종족원의 일부만 창씨명을 이름의 우측 또는 좌측에 방주로 기재하고 있다. 이런 차이는 창씨명의 실제 등록여부와는 관계없이, 전자는 창씨 여부를 의식적으로 족보에 반영하려 했고, 후자는 족보 편찬시 창씨명을 제출한 경우만 반영한 데 따른 것으로 보인다. 장하리 강씨의 창씨명이 모두 등재된 것은 족보 편찬자인 강진구의 의식적 노력의 산물로 보인다. 그는 족보에 창씨명을 분명하게 기재해 둠으로써 향후 종족의 해체나 종족원간의 잘못된 혼인 등에 대비하려고 했다. 이는 창씨개명의 현실을 인정하는 바탕 위에서 취할 수 있는 가장 적극적인 종족보존의 전략이었다고 할 만하다. 다른 종족집단의 족보에서는 이러한 적극적 입장이 나타나 있는 경우는 별로 없다. 그러나 족보에 창씨명을 기재(병기)한 이유가 종족원간의 있을 수 있는 혼란을 방지하기 위한 것임은 분명하다. 이 또한 소극적이지만 종족보존을 위한 전략적 선택으로 이해할 수 있다.
This study analyses the survival strategies of Korean local lineage groups against the family name change (創氏改名) policy enforced by imperial Japan, through investigating the genealogies of several lineage groups in the late Japanese colonial period. The genealogy of a small local lineage (Jangha-ri Kang-lineage) group in Chungnam province area was the main research material of this study. Some other genealogies were supplementary ones. The genealogy of Jangha-ri Kang-lineage built in letters of Japanese family names (創氏名) on given names of each lineage members. On the other hand, other genealogies built in letters of Japanese family names at the right or left side in the form of marginal notes. These facts reveal the differences of attitudes between two groups, regardless of the enrollment of Japanese family names or not. The fact that all of Jangha-ri Kang-family members have been enrolled Japanese family names on their genealogy was the result of conscious efforts by Jinkoo Kang (姜晉求) who had edited the genealogy. He had an idea of avoiding the future dilemma of blood mixture between same lineage members by cousciously enrolling Japanese family names of each member on the genealogy. This was the most positive strategy for preserving Jangha-ri Kang-lineage in considering the reality.
