이 글의 목적은 디지털 출판의 총합적 결과물 중 하나인 전자책의 출현 과정을 통하여 기존 종이책 중심의 지식정보생산양식이 어떻게 변화할 것인지 탐색하려는 것이다. 디지털 혁명을 배경으로 20세기 말 처음 등장한 전자책은 전통적 인쇄기술에 의존해왔던 기존의 지식정보생산양식을 획기적으로 변혁시킬 것으로 전망되어 왔다. 역사적으로 혁신적인 新기술의 출현은 급격한 사회 변화를 초래하여왔다. 그러나 전자책은 등장한 지 10여년의 세월이 흘렀음에도 당초 예상과 달리 그 성패를 판가름하기 어려운 상황에 놓여 있다. 이러한 상황에서 아마존이 2009년에 모바일 전자책 전용단말기 ‘킨들’을, 애플社가 2010년 초에 전자책 및 엔터테인먼트 기능을 모두 갖춘 태블릿PC ‘아이패드’를 전격 출시하고 전자책 콘텐츠를 본격 제공함에 따라 전자책이 최근 새롭게 주목받고 있다. 전자책의 등장에 앞서 시작된 문자의 디지털화 작업은 이미 사회 여러 영역에서 ‘종이 없는 사회(paperless society)’를 형성하였다. 특히 근래 가속되고 있는 문자의 디지털화, 디지털 출판 같은 현상은 대중화를 넘어 지식정보사회의 기반 기술로 자리 잡은 상태이다. 이렇게 볼 때 지식정보생산양식의 디지털화 추세는 거스를 수 없는 현실로 다가와 있다. 또 태블릿PC와 인터넷 등 네트워크 연결망을 통하여 더욱 확산될 전망이다. 이 연구는 이러한 전제를 토대로, 전자책이 디지털 네트워크 사회에 가져올 지식정보 생산양식의 변화 양상을 고찰하였다. 전자책의 퍼블리셔(publisher)와 뷰어(viewer), 디지털 편집 기술을 토대로 한 지식정보 생산력과 생산관계의 변화, 모바일 기술에 기반한 전자책단말기(device)의 대중화 및 지식정보의 유통과 소비 양태의 변화는 전통적 지식정보생산양식에 분명한 지형적 변화를 초래할 것이다.

This study discusses the accelerating process of electronic texts or electronic books as one feature of the overall effects of digital publications and investigates its impacts on the knowledge-information mode of production based on the traditional paper books. It has been predicted that the electronic texts which first appeared at the late twenty century would fundamentally transform the existing knowledge-information mode of production based on the traditional typography of printing. The emergence of innovative new technologies has historically brought about a rapid social change. Although more than ten years have passed away since the advent of e-books, situations are not so different unlike the earlier predictions. In this situation, however, electronic texts are drawing consumers’ attention again by launching e-book contents such as Amazon’s Kindle, an e-book exclusive device, in 2009 and Apple’s iPad, a tablet PC which combines e-book and entertainment appliances, in 2010. The digitalization of letters started prior to the advent of e-books and have already provided a new horizon of “paperless society” in various fields of the society. Particularly, the phenomena of the increasingly accelerating digitalization of letters and digital publications is an overwhelming trend as a technological foundation of society. In this respect, the trend of digitalization of the knowledge-information mode of production is becoming an irresistible reality and will be expanding through the network connections such as tablet PC and internet. Based on these premises, this research investigated the impacts of the advent of electronic books on the digital network society in terms of transformation in the knowledge-information mode of production. The transformation of the productive forces and relations of production of knowledge and information as the e-book publishing system consisted of publishers and viewers, and the transformation of the circulation and consumption of knowledge and information as an effect of the increasing popularization of e-book device will fundamentally transform the traditional mode of production-circulation-consumption of knowledge and information.
