이 연구는 대전․충청 지역신문들이 오피니언 면을 어떻게 운용하고 있는지를 알아보고 운영상 문제점과 개선방안은 무엇인지 논의하기 위한 것이다. 대전일보와 중도일보, 충청투데이를 대상으로 2002년, 2006년, 2011년 각 1월 한 달치 오피니언 면 칼럼 필자의 인적속성과 주제, 종류 등을 내용분석했다. 연구결과 세 신문의 칼럼 수는 증가했지만 칼럼을 통한 신문사간 차별화에는 실패한 모습이었다. 필진의 대부분이 교수, 전․현직 정치인, 기업 CEO였는데 교수 중에는 대학총장이 다수 포함돼 학교홍보에 치중했으며 선출직 자치단체장과 시․도의원, 기업대표 등 감시비판 대상이자 지역신문 최대 광고주들이 오피니언 면까지 차지해 광고홍보의 장으로 전락했다. 이런 필진들이 쓴 글은 현안논평과 전문가 견해가 부족했다. 지역신문들이 오피니언 면을 통해 공론장 기능을 회복하고 독자를 확보하기 위해서는 필진 폭을 넓히고 전문성을 강화해야한다. 또 칼럼주제의 외연을 넓히고 현안논평과 전문가적 견해가 담긴 칼럼을 생산하기 위해 필진과 주제 등을 지속적으로 분석 평가하는 칼럼평가위원회 등 제도적 장치가 필요하다. 아울러 날카로운 필력과 균형감각을 가진 내부필진을 발굴 육성해 신문의 정체성을 회복해야할 것이다. 지역신문 오피니언 칼럼에 대한 연구가 부족한 현실에서 이 연구는 권력을 가진 소수를 위한 홍보수단으로 전락하는 지역신문이 그 역할을 회복하려면 오피니언 면을 사회의 다양한 목소리를 두루 반영하는 공간으로 만들어야한다는 것을 보여주었다.
The purposes of this study are to investigate how the opinion section has been operated by the local newspaper of Daejeon and Chungcheong and discuss the operational problems and ways to solve the problems. The columns in the opinions section of ‘Daejon Ilbo’, ‘Joongdo Ilbo’, and ‘Chungcheong Today’ were analyzed for a month in January 2002, 2006, and 2011 in terms of the writers' characteristics, subjects and kinds. As a result I could see the three newspapers failed to differentiate themselves from others in columns while they have increased the number of columns. Most of the writers were professors, former or incumbent politicians, and CEOs. Professors including majority of presidents focused on promoting their colleges and the elected officials of local governments, municipals, province and CEOs who are major advertisers of the local newspaper and objects of being watched promoted themselves through the columns. To recover their roles as public sphere and gain readers they need to have diverse writers and reinforce their professionalism. Also they need to provide an institutional strategy such as a column appraisal board which analyses and appraises writers and subjects regularly to expand the scope of column and provide a criticism about the latest issues and professional views. At the same time they should recover their identity by educating their own writers to have a good writing skill and balance.
