본 논문은 퇴계가 山水를 읊은 詩와 歌曲을 중심으로 하여 그의 산수 문학에 『주역』적 원리가 어떻게 반영되어 있으며 그 도덕적 이상을 어떻게 그리고 있는가 하는 점을 고찰하고자 하였다. 퇴계는 자연의 산과 내, 돌과 물, 그리고 솔과 대나무 숲과 같은 경물을 읊으면서 이들에 『주역』의 상징적 도덕적 의미를 부여함으로써 수양을 하고 성정을 닦는 방편으로 삼았다. 그는 산수자연의 경물에 마음을 투사함으로써 외적 환경을 마음속으로 끌어들이면서도 다른 한편 그 속에 들어가서 머물러 지속적으로 궁리와 수양 공부를 한다고 하는 관점을 보여주었다. 퇴계가 산수 자연의 경물을 체험하면서 이처럼 마음을 닦고 덕성을 기르는 상징적 의미를 이끌어내는 것은 『주역』의 물상이 가지는 기능과 동일한 의미를 내포하는 것이다. 퇴계는 주희의 『역학계몽』을 해설한 저작으로서 『계몽전의』를 지었다. 그는 『주역』이 자연의 변화 법칙으로서 天理를 象으로 드러내는 것으로 이해하였다. 이 天理는 결국 인간의 도덕적 본질로서 본성의 우주론적 근거가 되는 것이다. 퇴계의 산수에 관한 시는 산수의 구체적인 경물들을 단순한 감각적 대상으로만 바라보지 않고, 『주역』이 드러내는 자연의 이치와 천리를 현현하고 있는 상징물로 인식한다. 뿐만 아니라 자연 대상들은 그대로 마음 외부에 머물러 있는 것이 아니라 생명력을 가지고 살아 움직이는 것이 되어 대상을 바라보는 사람의 마음속으로 들어와 일체가 되기도 한다. 이 과정을 통하여 외부의 天理는 사람의 마음속에 내재해 있는 천리로서 本性과 합일하여 주객합일, 천인합일의 경지가 이루어진다. 이런 점에서 퇴계가 산수시에서 자연 경물을 도덕적 실천을 위한 표준으로 간주하는 것은 『주역』에 대한 퇴계의 의리적 해석과 일관하는 관점이라고 할 수 있다.

This essay intended to examine moral orientation, aesthetic sensibility and their correlativity of meaning reflected in his scenic literature by making poem and song which Toegye[退溪] recited the center. In the concrete, this thesis tries to illuminate the theme of experience of Confucian moral ideal and mental cultivation implied in the poems which Toegye exposes contemplation and sentimentality about hills and waters. While reciting the scenery of the season such as mountain and river, stone and water, and pine tree and bamboo of nature, Toegye made them an instrument for moral cultivation by giving moral meaning to these matters. That Toegye derives the symbolic meaning of cultivation of virtue from natural scenic matters like this is the best general attitude that he composes poems. He regarded the Books of Changes[周易]as writing which exposes natural principle[天理] as the change law of nature as a symbol. Toegye’s poems about hills and streams doesn’t view concrete natural matters as simple sensual object, understand them as symbolic object which exposes a natural principle. Moreover in Toegye natural objects are not stay in the outside of mind, while being lively with vitality, they come into people’s mind and are united together with them. Through this process, the outer natural principle is united together with human nature implied in people’s mind.
