류연산(柳燃山)은 치열한 작가정신으로 수십 년을 하루와 같이 부지런히 자료발굴과 유적 답사를 하였고 기사, 수기, 수필, 칼럼, 기행, 전기, 비평 등 산문의 거의 모든 하위(下位) 장르에 걸쳐 풍성하게 창작활동을 하였다. 특히 기행과 전기 쪽에서 큰 업적을 일궈냈는데, 그 대신 소설을 비롯한 기타 장르는 평단의 관심을 덜 받았다. 류연산은 소설에서도 괄목할 만한 성과를 올렸다. 그는 당대 사회의 비정과 비리, 권력층의 부정부패에 대한 최하층 인간들의 원성(怨聲)을 대변하였으며 가공적인 배경과 선악의 대결 구도, 모더니즘 내지 포스트모더니즘 소설의 기법들을 받아들여 현실 비판의 힘을 키워갔다. 1980년대 자신의 절실한 체험에 바탕을 두고 상처문학, 반성문학과는 색다른 풍격을 보여줌으로써 이 시기 문학에 이채를 돋우었다. 류연산은 작가적 책임과 용기를 가지고 조선족 문단에서 가장 일찍 ‘민생단 사건’을 소설화하였다. 그는 여러 가지 사회적 제한성을 극복하면서 ‘민생단 사건民生團事件)’이라는 잔혹한 역사의 진실을 파헤치고 디아스포라문학의 특질과 가능성을 열어 놓았다. 이방(異邦)에서 주체성을 상실하고 이쪽저쪽 눈치를 보면서 살았던 “과경민족”의 근성[劣根性]에도 메스를 들이댐으로써 자아 성찰과 반성을 통한 우리 민족의 성숙을 지향했다. 뿐만 아니라 류연산은 6·25전쟁의 음영과 남북 분단의 비극을 고발하고 인도주의에 의한 민족 화합의 실마리를 찾고 있다. 특히 민족주의적 한계와 흑백논리를 극복하고 사랑과 이해에 의한 동아시아 공동체의 미래상을 그렸다. 요컨대 강한 사회비판성과 투철한 역사의식, 그리고 인도주의는 류연산 소설의 특징이자 힘이다.

Liu Yeonsun is an enthusiastic writer who explores sources and sites with perseverance and consistency. Meanwhile, he also works on many other basic sub genres such as recording of events, reading notes, essays, travel notes, biography and literary criticism. In particular, he has made great achievements in travel notes and biography, however, little attention has been paid by the critics to his novels. In fact, Liu Yeonsun has made remarkable achievement in novels. He bitterly criticizes the corruption of the authority and speaks out the protests and complaints for the lower class. Under background of conflict between justice and evil, he is influenced by modernism and postmodernism and applies the artistic technique to his novel in order to strengthen his critical power of reality. In 1980s, instead of novels of trauma or introspection based on his experience, his writing shows different scenes which adds colors to the literature of this period. With obligation and courage, Liu Yeonsun reflects historical event of “Min Sang Dun” in his novels. His exploration of the cruel reality of the history shows features and possibilities of Diaspora literature. His attempts aims at maturity of our nationality by self reflection and introspection. In addition, he exposes the tragedy of Korean war and division of the North and South Korea and seeks for harmony between nations. Especially by overcoming the limitation of nationalism, he depicts the future of East Asia based on love and understanding. In brief, intense social criticism, historical consciousness and humanitarianism are the features of Liu Yeonsun’s novels.
