Teachers’ Spirituality from the Perspective of Cardinal Kim’s Understanding of Human Beings

이 연구의 목적은 김수환 추기경이 지녔던 인간에 대한 이해를 정리하고 이를 바탕으로 하여 가톨릭 교사의 영성을 고찰하는 것이다. 이 목적을 위해 김 추기경의 인간에 관한 이해를 네 가지 관점으로 요약하였는데, 이는 신비로서의 인간 이해, 창조된 존재로서의 인간 이해, 구원된 존재로서의 인간 이해, 소명을 받은 존재로서의 인간 이해 등이다. 인간의 이성의 합리성과 과학의 실증주의로는 규명할 수 없는 자체로 하나의 신비로서 하느님의 무한한 사랑으로 창조되었고 예수 그리스도의 십자가와 부활로 구원되었으며, 하느님의 사랑을 전할 소명을 받고 있다. 가톨릭 교사들은 교육이라는 중대한 사명을 통해 하느님의 사랑을 구체적으로 학교생활과 학생들 안에서 실현하는 존재들이다. 하느님 사랑의 증거자로서 교사가 지닌 사명은 ‘교사의 영성’을 요구한다. 교사의 영성이란 필리피 2장 7절의 예수 그리스도의 육화와 십자가의 신비로 요약되는 케노시스(kenosis)의 영성이다. 케노시스의 영성을 지닌 교사는 그리스도처럼 학생들을 사랑할 뿐 아니라 그들을 위해 목숨을 바칠 수 있으며, 학생들이 하느님의 사랑을 깨달아 모든 인간을 존중하고 나아가 진리와 자유와 정의를 위해 헌신하도록 만든다. 케노시스의 영성을 실천하기 위해 교사는 먼저 하느님의 말씀 속에서 살고, 그리스도를 닮아 사랑을 실천하며 나아가 학교를 사랑의 공동체로 형성하는 데 헌신한다.

The purpose of this study is to summarize Cardinal Kim’s understanding of human beings, and on the basis of this, to investigate the spirituality of Catholic teachers. For this purpose, the study views human beings from four perspectives: mystery itself, the created one, the redeemed one, and the one called for caritas (love). A human being is a mystery itself that is defined by rational reasoning or scientific positivism, is the one who is created with God’s love, is the redeemed one by Christ’s crucifix sacrifice and resurrection, and is the one called to fulfill God’s love. Catholic teachers accomplish this within their students and schools using a special method—education. To realize this mission “spirituality” of teachers should be needed. The spirituality of teachers can be defined as “the spirituality of kenosis,” which is described in St. Paul’s letter to the Philippians (2:7). Teachers equipped with the spirituality of kenosis love students and sacrifice themselves for students as Jesus Christ did. They also help their students recognize God’s love and to make efforts for truth, freedom, and justice. In developing their spirituality, teachers should live within the Word, practice Christ’s love, and build a school community of love.
