이 연구의 목적은 SIOP 모형을 기반으로 한 계승어 교육을 통해 다문화 배경 학습자의 계승어 문식성을 신장시키고 부모 나라의 언어와 사회, 문화에 대한 맥락적․비판적 이해 능력을 함양하는 방안을 강구하는 데 있다. 거시적 관점에서 SIOP 모형이 계승어 문식성 신장을 위해 적용될 수 있는 가능성은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 언어와 교과 지식을 동시에 가르치는 이원화 언어 프로그램으로 적용시켜야 한다. 둘째, 학업 문식성 신장을 위한 ‘학습 언어 능력’ 발달에 초점을 두어야 한다. 셋째, 언어와 문화, 사회에 대한 코드 변환 능력의 신장에 역점을 두어야 한다. 넷째, 학생과 프로그램에 대한 주기적인 진단과 평가가 요구된다. 다섯째, 특화된 교육과정 설계와 자료의 개발이 필요하다. 여섯째, 소수 언어 공동체와 유기적 관련성을 맺고 학습이 진행되어야 한다.
The purpose of this study is to explore the ways to develop multicultural students' heritage language literacy and their contextual and critical competence regarding their parents' language, society, and culture using the SIOP model. From a macro perspective, the SIOP model can be applied to the development of heritage language literacy as follows: 1) working as a dual language program where heritage language and subject matter knowledge can be taught simultaneously; 2) developing academic language proficiency; 3) improving the code switching ability with relation to language, culture, and society; 4) evaluating both students and program on a regular basis; 5) developing a specialized curriculum and instructional materials; and 6) having a close relationship with minority language communities.
