I want consider some aesthetic elements of Korean traditional comedy in the method to raise a laugh in the Korean comedy films of the late 1960’s. First, the factors to raise a laugh in appearance, personality, speech and action of the characters relate to Korean traditional comedy. The appearance of the characters gets a laugh by the special features of comedians and the appearance below the standard. The personality of the characters gets a laugh by criticizing differential, narrow and obstinate personality, and by contrast or emphasis of appearance/personality. The speech and action of the characters raise a laugh by revealing mistakes and defects with abnormal and illogical speeches and actions. The comedy films criticize the upper class citizens and the males by this laugh of appearance, personality, speech and action. Secondly, the techniques and principles of laugh in characters relate to Korean traditional comedy. The protagonists--the lower class citizens-- raise a laugh by an irregularity, deviation, parody, imitation and witticism. The protagonists criticize silliness and greed of the antagonists--the upper class citizens-- by wit, fraud, trickery, cynicism, comment, a counterattack and reversal. The females reveal desire and hypocrisy of the antagonists by exposure, disclose and debauchery. The males reveal their incapacity and cowardice by exaggeration, bluster, a mistake and satire. Thirdly, The comic features and functions of laugh in the films have some aesthetic elements of Korean traditional comedy. In the comic features, the films show indirect criticism, polite laugh and reconciliation of conflict by double comments, mixing satire/humor and irony. In the functions of laugh, the films give audience a sense of superiority, relieving the tension and a sense of freedom by defects and indecent behavior of characters, criticizing the upper class citizens, a solution of problem, and unfamiliarity. The Korean comedy films of the late 1960s’ have some aesthetic elements of Korean traditional comedy in the factors to raise a laugh in appearance, personality, speech and action of the characters, in the technique and principle of laugh in characters, and in the comic features and functions of laugh.
