The Symbols and Transformation of the Images of Water in Greek Mythology

본 논문은 서구 정신의 기원이 되는 그리스 신화로부터 철학에 이르기까지 네원소에 대한 상상력을 통해 서구 문화의 상징과 이미지의 원형적 구조와 생산 및변용을 검토하는 데 목표가 있다. 서구 상징체계를 설명하기 위해 독자적인 이론적구조를 확립해야 할 필요가 있다. 우선 인간의 정신이 구조화되는 방식을 설명하기위해 상징과 이미지의 ‘근원’적 관점, ‘현상’적 관점, ‘기능’적 관점, ‘문화’적 관점등 네 가지 관점을 도출하고, 다음으로 인간의 정신 속에서 작동하는 방식을 설명하기 위해 상징과 이미지의 ‘원리’, ‘표상’, ‘생산’, ‘변용’이라는 네 가지 과정을 추출하였다. 본 논문에서는 특히 서구의 네 원소들 중 물의 상징과 이미지를 중심으로 논의를전개한다. 첫째, 근원적 관점에서 물이 영원한 생명력을 상징하고 생산의 이미지를표상하며, 둘째, 현상적 관점을 통해 변화와 운동을 상징하며 경계와 소통의 이미지를 표상하는 것을 알 수 있다. 셋째, 기능적 관점을 통해 물이 정화와 치유의 기능을상징하며 재생의 이미지를 가진다는 것을 알 수 있다. 넷째, 문화적 관점을 통해물이 죽음의 두려움과 공포 및 광기의 이미지로 굴절되면서 괴물과 여성적 이미지로변용되는 것을 알 수 있다.

This treatise is aimed to consider the archetypal structure, reproduction andtransformation relating to symbol and image of Western culture through the imagination ofthe four elements to philosophy from Greek mythology to be the origin of the Westernspirit. Above all for explaining Western symbol systems, it is necessary to establish its owntheoretical structure. First, I have derived the point of “ culture ”, the point of “ function ”,and the point of “ phenomenon ” from material or hyle for symbol and image in order toexplain how the human spirit is structured. And then I have extracted three processes of “representation”, “reproduction” and “transformation” from material or hyle for symbol andimage for explaining how to operate within the human spirit. In this paper, I have arguedabout the symbol and image of water in the four elements of Western Europe. First, water isa symbol of eternal life and represents the image of the mother from the phenomenologicalpoint of view, and it is also a symbol of fertility and represented image of reproduction. Second, water is a symbol of purification and healing from the functional point of view, andmakes an image of the reproduction. It also symbolizes the boundaries of life and death,and makes an image of communication. Third, water is a symbol of the movement from thecultural point of view, and generates an image of wisdom. Futhermore it is refracted notonly image of mania and fear and anxiety, but also transformed an feminine image ofmonster and death.
