The purpose of this paper is to explore of usage and meaning of negative sentences employed by learners of Korean as a foreign language. The negative forms are taught in level 1 and basic grammar. Korean negatives are expressed with three forms, ‘안/않-, 못/못하-, 말-’. These forms have different meanings and functions. Korean learners use these negative forms differently with Korean native speakers. Therefore this study analyzes the leaners’language data and investigates the usages of Korean leaners’negation. If we analyze the usages of negative sentences in learners’corpus, we can explain the interlanguage of Korean learners in negation. The corpus used in the study consists of Korean learners’writing texts from <KLI CORPUS>. It comprises around 160,000 words in texts. As a result of analysis, the ‘안’negative sentences are used more than ‘못, 말다’ in texts. Generally errors of forms in negation are a few regardless levels. But errors of meanings in negation are the most in level 3. And Korean learners use the function of expressing speaker’s attitude in negation after intermediate levels.
