The present study is designed to examine the sociolinguisitoc profile of heritage language learners in English speaking countries according to their Korean language proficiency. According to the results of the interviews, it appears that the entire group of language learners have positive attitude toward learning Korean language and culture. The results also show that they are maximizing both their integral and instrumental motivation. However some significant differences were found between identity, linguistic surroundings and linguistic needs based on their Korean language proficiency. It was found that beginning-level learners used their heritage language less at home and barely had access to Korean speaking environments. In addition, they often had their external identity formed by other people and their knowledge of Korean culture was superficial. Intermediate learners had a high level of Korean use at home and they constantly had access to Korean through media. They have a solid knowledge of Korean culture and are on the way to building an internalized Korean identity. The study revealed that advanced level learners are constanly connected to Korean language and culture not only domestically but also through media and the local community. They are stable forming their internal identity and have an underlying knowledge of Korean culture.
