A new regionalism, along with a renewal of regional studies, has arisen since the mid-1980s, sparked by the example of European integration and the fact of increasing regional and global flows. Although East Asia, with all its geopolitical and geoeconomic significance, has had some difficulty finding a regional identity for itself, there have been a number of catalyzing factors, the Asian financial crisis and globalization foremost among them, that have served to encourage regional cooperation between the major Northeastern core states (China, Japan, and South Korea) and their more organized neighbors in Southeast Asia. The idea of East Asia found expression in the formation of ASEAN Plus Three (APT) in the heat of the Asian financial crisis, opening the door to additional regional initiatives. The region with its history of ideational diversity and military and economic disparity, however, will continue to face multiple challenges in the uncertain years ahead. The future of East Asian regionalism will depend upon continued economic cooperation, a shared sense of vulnerability, and Chinas continued integration into and cooperation inside, regional political and economic systems.
