마야문명의 대표적인 희생의례는 ‘단두의례’이다. ‘단두의례’의 모습은 치첸이쯔아(Chichen Itza, Yucatan, Mexico)와 이사빠(Izapa, Chiapas, Mexico)의 공놀이 경기장과 같은 공놀이와 관계된 건축물에서 발견된다. 그리고 ‘잘려진 머리’는 비석, 신전의 벽화, 채색토기의 그림에 반복되어 나타난다. ‘단두의례’의 기원은「뽀뽈부(Popol Vuh)」에 기록된 공놀이에 있다. 공놀이는 해가 진 뒤에 지하의 세계에서 여행을 하는 해의 은유이다. 지하세계의 해는 금성이다. 해와 금성은 마야의 왕이 하는 일을 상징한다. 마야의 왕은 지하세계의 신들과 싸워 이겨서 다시 태어나야 한다. 왕은 마야사람들의 양식인 옥수수의 신이기 때문이다. 따라서 마야시대에는 공놀이가 우주의 재생, 특히 옥수수의 재생을 나타낸다고 믿었다. 공놀이에서 공이 떨어지는 것은 옥수수신의 머리가 잘리는 것을 의미하고, 공이 다시 튀어 오르는 것은 재생을 의미한다. 머리가 잘린 자리에서 솟아오르는 피는 옥수수알갱이가 줄을 이어 있는 것을 나타낸다. 공이 나타내는 잘린 머리와 피를 나타내는 옥수수알갱이는 재생을 위한 두 요소이다. 피와 옥수수의 관계는 재생이라는 속성에 있다. 따라서 공놀이 경기자의 머리를 자르는 것은 잘 익은 옥수수를 자르는 것과 같다. 해와 금성의 일을 하며 동시에 옥수수신인 마야의 왕은 공놀이 경기의 주된 경기자이다. 그는 머리가 잘려서 죽고 지하의 세계에서 다시 살아나야만 한다. 머리를 자르는 희생의례의 의미는 옥수수신의 희생과 그 부활에 있다. 따라서 ‘단두의례’는 천체와 자연의 운행을 올바르게 하는 의례인 동시에 마야의 왕권을 합법적으로 계승하는 것이었다.
The most representative sacrificial ritual of Mayan civilization was the ritual of decapitation. The decapitation ritual normally took place at monuments related to ball-games such as Ball court of Chichen Itza, Yucatan and Izapa, Chiapas of Mexico. And the decapitated face appeared in stelae, painted wall or vase painting. The origin of ball-game could be found in ‘opol Vuh’ Ball-games are a metaphor representing the journey of the Sun in the underground world after sunset. The Sun of the underground world is Venus. Venus must fight against the gods of the underground world to rise again as the Sun. Since the Maya king is Maize God, the movement of Venus and Sun represened the work of Maya king. During Mayan times the ball-game was believed to regenerate the universe, especially maize cultivation. In the ball-game, dropping the ball symbolized the decapitation of the head and rolling the ball symbolized regeneration. The blood from the decapitated head was considered to represent the maize grain lines on the corn cob. The ball representing the decapitated head and the maize grain lines representing the blood are essential elements for regeneration. The relationship between blood and maize lies in the regenerative character of both. Cutting the ball player’ head represented the cutting of the ripened maize plant. The Maya king who was also the Maize God, was a principal ball player in the ball game. He died by decapitation and must be regenerated in the underground world. The meaning of the sacrificial ritual of decapitation stems from the sacrifice of the Maize God and his regeneration. It is a ritual to keep the order of universe at the same time the Mayan kingship properly.
