This article clarifies the process of formation and friction of Suh Jaepil’s national identity. First, I will shed light on the inter-relations among self, other(s) and the internal-external context of Chosŏn, with its change, in the process of formation of Suh’s national identity. Next, to understand the friction of Suh’s national identity, I will examine the articles of the newspaper “The Independence” published by him. This examination is divided into two subjects of the ‘viewpoint of Chosŏn－self-esteem and contempt for Chosŏn’ and the ‘sovereignty-independence－national right(s) and power of nation-state.’ Finally, I will critically reflect the modernity of Suh’s national identity.
