It has been in a while since the suggestion that the study regarding history of popular movements in the 19th century was stagnant was pointed out and this article is to examine it in the historiographical way with the study regarding the revolt against emancipation proclamation in 1870s. The revolt against emancipation proclamation is generally known as a public protest movement against the modernization plan pushed by Meiji regime, but it involved violence for the minority such as the raid on the village. This article examines the task and the possibility of the study regarding history of popular movements with the violence for the minority as a keyword.
