This paper examined the historical process to establish Japanology in Joseon during the late 18th-century. Joseon had dispatched envoys to Japan since 17th century. As a result, Joseon was able to steadily accumulate academic knowledge about Japan. Munkyeonchongnok, the appendix added to Sahengilgi, is especially notable. The establishment of Japanology in the late Joseon period was closely related to Munkyeonchongnok’s tradition of writing. Indebted to this tradition of writing, Won Jung-geo was able to write Hwagukji, the first Japanological work in Joseon. Lee Duk-mu inherited Hwagukji’s outcome and completed another Japanological work titled Cheongnyeonggukji.
