<Sookyoungnangjajeon> is affectional novel estimated to be created from the late 18th century to the early 19th century. However, in the way that this novel describes the heroine's death and resuscitation in the contrary of the other affectional novel, so I intend to investigate the cause and meaning of the death, Sookyoung and Paeksungoon, the heroine and hero, as the celestial maiden and official, descended to the human world owing to the sin of their love, and they continued to be closely bound up together by Heaven's will. However, Paeksanggong, Sungoon’s human father, had doubts about Sookyoung’s chastity and finally led her to die. This story contains the conflict of the value between holiness and secularity. Sookyoung, a celestial maiden, could not adapt herself to the secular life and met her death. It would be to show the power of secular value. On the other hand, the love has the meaning as a new value which does not belong to any part in the middle between holiness and secularity. However, this work shows the end which the love of the spiritual value met a tragedy by material secularism. It might be possibility of just the romantic wish that Sookyoung revived and ascended to heaven with Sungoon. This novel reflects the social aspect which holy world was denied and then actualism was getting stronger, and describes the agony of human resisting secularization. In this point it is worthy to be evaluated that <Sookyoungnangjajeon> achieves the serious introspection in the tragic perception.
