Yoon Yun-ki’s National Consciousness and Educational Activities during the Colonial period

윤윤기(1900~1950)는 전남 보성 출신으로 일제강점기 동안 전남지역의 보통학교, 간이학교, 사설학교 등에서 교육 활동을 전개한 인물이다. 그에 대한 학문적 연구가 활발하게 진척되지 않고 있는 이유는 본인의 글과 그에 관한 당대 자료가 많이 남아 있지 않기 때문이다. 이글에서는 그에 관한 구술·증언 자료를 활용했다. 구술 자료의 경우 윤윤기의 민족의식과 교육 활동과 관련해서 시기와 장소에 관한 기억이 일치하고, 반복적으로 강조된 내용에 주목했다. 이를 통해 일제강점기 동안 그의 사범학교 학생, 보통학교 훈도, 전시체제기의 교육 활동이 당대 어떠한 의미를 지니는지를 살펴봄으로써, 그의 생애와 활동을 재조명했다. 일제강점기 동안 윤윤기는 민족운동가, 농촌계몽가, 독립운동가, 민족주의자의 모습으로 살았다. 한국 근현대사에 호남지역 그리고 초등교육 영역과 밀접한 관계를 맺었던 그의 삶과 활동에 관한 재조명은 호남지역에서의 교육활동의 범주를 넘어서 한국 사회와 학생·청년에게 전망을 제시하는 방안으로 연결되어야 한다.

Yoon Yun-ki(1900~1950) was born in Bosung district, Chonnam province. He mostly had taught elementary schools’ students during the colonial period. Even though his important roles of the area in elementary education, his activities do not catch researcher’s attentions. Because there was no many documents on his works. So this paper focuses on materials of his students’ oral statements. Until recently, there has been little concern about oral history and oral materials did not draw a scholarly attention because of lacking reliability and correctness. However oral documents are very useful to explain Yoon Yun-ki’s educational activities. This paper attempts to emphasize the students’ common memories and repetitious statements on Yoon’s national consciousness and educational activities. Based on these historical materials, we can ritually display what his remarkable achievements on elementary education. During the Japanese colonial period, Yoon Yun-ki had lived as a nationalist, rural enlightenment-activist, intellectual of national independence movement. Among of his works, we especially need to have a clear recollection of his educational activities in Chonnam province. Reflecting on his achievements is important not only for the data of regional history but also the prospect for Korean community’s history.
