이 논문의 목적은 최고선을 칸트 윤리학과의 연관성 속에서 해석하는 주요 주장을 검토함으로써, 최고선의 도덕적 도출과 적용이 어렵다는 것을 밝히는 것이다. 칸트에 따르면 최고선의 두 요소인 덕과 행복은 서로 전혀 다른 성격의 것이기 때문에 이 둘을 조화시키는 것은 어려운 일이다. 이를 해결하기 위해 칸트는 신을 요청하는 한편 행복의 다의적 전개를 수행함으로써 도덕세계와 감성세계의 조화를 이루고자 한다. 실버는 칸트와는 다소 다른 방식으로 최고선의 도출을 이끌어 내는데, 사변적 표상들과 실천적 표상들 간의 상보적인 연관성 속에서 자연세계와 도덕세계의 합일을 이끌어낸다. 그리고 이러한 기반 위에서 실버는 최고선을 다시 도덕성의 직접적인 실현의 도구로 사용하려고 시도하는데, 벡은 칸트의 기본적인 도덕 원리에 비추어 그러한 시도가 불가능함을 주장한다. 칸트 스스로가 강조하듯이 도덕 법칙만이 행위의 도덕성을 근거 짓는 원리이며, 질료적 요소가 배제되어 있는 선험적 형식으로서 의지를 근원적으로 규정할 수 있다. 따라서 실버 이후 최고선을 세속적인 문제로 해석하려는 사람들은 형이상학적인 부분을 제외함으로써 최고선의 도덕적 도출과 적용이 가능하다고 생각한다. 그들은 최고선과 도덕법칙의 동일성에 초점을 맞춘다. 하지만 그러한 시도들 역시 최고선의 의도와 특성을 왜곡하거나 칸트 윤리학의 자율성을 훼손하는 방식으로 전개되는 구조적 한계를 지닐 수밖에 없고, 필자는 최고선을 도덕 외적인 것으로 간주하고자 한다.

The aim of this thesis is to show that the desire for the Highest Good is not to be justified in terms of morality, and interpret it from the extra-moral point of view. To do this, I examined the functions and the status of the Highest Good in Kant’s philosophy, and compared the two different interpretations of it. One is to emphasize the moral significance of the notion, and the other is to regard it as an extra-moral element. Based on Kant’s ethics and Beck’s opinion, I can say the following conclusions. First, the Highest Good is not to serve as the final ground for the moral will. Only the moral law is the principle to determine the morality of conducts, and the Highest Good rather destroys the autonomy of the morals. Second, the key role of the Highest Good in Kant's practical philosophy is to serve the fulfillment of virtue and happiness. The Highest Good in Kant’s practical philosophy is meant to reconcile virtue and happiness without damaging morality, and thus, satisfy the ends of practical reason as a whole that aims at happiness in physical condition with moral nature. Third, the Highest Good is just a teleological ideal. As the Highest Good follows a rational nature that demands the synthesis of ends into a system, it does not mean to bear moral implications. Therefore, It is hard to accept that the Highest Good can play directly moral roles.
