신변소설 작가 안회남이 해방을 맞아 문맹의 소설부 위원장으로 부상한 것은 횡단징용의 피해문인으로 주목받던 그를 포섭함으로써 문맹의 조직과 노선에 대해 사람들의 폭넓은 심정적 동조를 불러오기 위해 임화, 김남천, 이원조 등 지도부가 주도한 연출의 결과로 여겨진다. 그는 실상 문인징용의 희생자로서 첫 사례도 유일한 경우도 아니었고, 여러 자료들의 분석을 통해 추론해 볼 때 차라리 일제강점 말기 총동원체제 아래서 송출된 소위 징용작가였다고 할 수 있다. 징용 직전까지 발표한 국책문학 계열의 작품들은 그의 신변소설이 기조로 하는 온정주의와 파시즘의 내면화가 유착된 양상을 보여주는데, 그 연장선상에 그와 같은 징용작가에 대한 당국의 기대지평이 놓였던 것이라 생각된다. 일제의 패망과 함께 국책문학이 자동 소멸되면서 그 자신의 징용 경험담을 제재로 왕성하게 집필한 이른바 징용소설 연작들은 온정주의를 기조로 하는 그 특유의 신변소설을 답습한 것으로서 소박한 심정적 민족주의에 영합하는 수준이었다. 문맹의 활동이 본격화됨에 따라 그는 신변소설을 탈각한 작가로의 변신을 시도했으나, 문맹노선의 이론과 사상에 일방적으로 편승한 것이었다는 점에서 그 진정성에 대한 평가는 매우 제한적일 수밖에 없다.
Ahn, Hoi-nam, well known for the writer of personal novel, emerged as the novel department chairman of the Korea Writers Federation(KWF). It is reckoned to be the outcome of the project led by the leaders of KWF, Yim Hwa, Kim Nam Cheon, Yi Won Jo etc, to gain the mental sympathy of the people with the organization and line of KWF broadly. In fact he was not the first instance and the only case of the victim of compulsory draft as the writer, according to the inferences from various data could be rather so-called the draft-writer sent to the place of duty by the total mobilization of Japanese Imperialism. His works, belonged to the lineage of the national project literature, shows the appearance of the back-scratching alliance of paternalism as basis of his personal novel and internalization of fascism. We can think that in the extension of the appearance the horizon of expectation for the draft-writer like him given by the authorities of that time was laid. Together with the collapse of Japanese Imperialism the national project literature went out of existence, and then he wrote what is called the series of compulsory draft novel that handled with the subject matters of his own experiences related to the compulsory draft. But those were as ever sticked to his unique personal novel, and stopped to the level swimming with naive mental nationalism. At the full-scale phase of KWF he tried to transform the style of writing from the personal novel writer, nevertheless the judgement of his authenticity cannot but be limited severely because he jumped on the theory and idea of KWF ex parte.
